About The Position

This is a seasonal position for an Assistant Track Coach at Cañon City High School, running from April to May. The role involves a stipend based on the Supplemental Salary Schedule and years of experience, with a starting supplemental of $2,743-$3,883. Coaching assignments are one-year contracts.

Requirements

  • Must be a certified teacher or administrator holding a current certificate issued by the Colorado Department of Education; OR
  • Employed as a teacher, counselor, and/or administrator at least 50% of the school day in a private school; OR
  • A registered volunteer with Canon City Schools.

Responsibilities

  • Develop good rapport with numerous individuals and community groups, including team personnel, students, faculty, administration, maintenance staff, community members, spectators, officials, fellow coaches, media representatives, and parents.
  • Work cooperatively with the school athletic director, administration, other staff, team, and parents.
  • Exhibit diligence, enthusiasm, integrity, honesty, and a love for the game.
  • Maintain exemplary personal appearance, including proper coaching attire and shoes, and good physical condition.
  • Reflect positively on the coach, team, athletic department, school, and community through public demeanor and decorum.
  • Implement and maintain a high level of discipline among coaches, players, and support staff.
  • Model adherence to school codes, rules of the game, ideals of good sportsmanship, and participants' behavior.
  • Emphasize the desire to do well, win gracefully, and lose with poise and a positive attitude.
  • Motivate staff, players, and spectators to achieve established goals.
  • Take advantage of opportunities for self-improvement, including regular attendance at district meetings, rules clinics, special workshops, and training opportunities.
  • Maintain membership in professional organizations and coaches' associations.
  • Stay informed about current literature in professional journals, newspapers, and magazines, and utilize enrichment materials from other media.
  • Use sound and acceptable teaching practices.
  • Run well-organized practice sessions.
  • Complete pre-season planning well in advance of the starting date.
  • Implement a highly efficient and technically sound program of injury prevention.
  • Follow a prescribed routine and maintain good communication with the patient, trainer, and parents when injuries occur.
  • Construct a well-organized game plan.
  • Develop a sound system for equipment accountability.
  • Keep assistant coaches, volunteers, student managers, and statisticians well informed about expectations.
  • Cooperate fully with building staff, other programs, media, support staff, and administration.
  • Cooperate fully with maintenance staff, transportation, and others supporting the program.
  • Promote and teach only ethical, aggressive, and fair play, while stressing good sportsmanship at all times.
  • Be responsible for teaching skills and techniques pertinent to the sport, as well as continually modeling and monitoring behavior and academics.
  • Aid in the development of the whole person.
  • Be fair and unprejudiced with players, and sensitive to individual differences, needs, interests, temperaments, attitudes, and tolerances.
  • Consistently build confidence in the coach, the school, and the district through actions.
  • Owe the school maximal effort and loyalty at all times.
  • Constantly strive for excellence throughout the program, department, and school.
  • Treat faculty, staff, and the student body with dignity and respect.
  • Support all endorsed school activities.

  • Encourage independent thought among assistant coaches and maintain lines of communication for idea exchange.
  • Discuss disagreements with fellow coaches privately and promptly.
  • Expect all staff to contribute a full measure of time, effort, thought, and energy to the program.
  • Communicate expectations clearly before the season.
  • Value and appropriately praise assistant coaches for their contributions.
  • Ensure assistant coaches have a strong sense of allegiance to the program and are willing to fulfill responsibilities.
  • Ensure assistant coaches are willing to put in a full measure of time, effort, thought, and energy to the program and the head coach.
  • Support, promote, and cooperate with all other coaches and activity sponsors for the well-being of the total athletic program.
  • Communicate regularly about athletes and off-season schedules so athletes can participate in a wide variety of activities.
  • Support and cooperate with other coaches whenever possible.
  • Reflect confidence in fellow coaches in all remarks.
  • Maintain a strong, harmonious interpersonal relationship with other faculty members.
  • Cooperate with every faculty member, including allowing athletes to make up tests or homework during practice time.
  • Keep the practice area and locker rooms in order.
  • Store equipment properly and use equipment properly.
  • Keep locker rooms and storage areas locked.
  • File proper maintenance requests on large items of need.
  • Foster pride in equipment and facilities.
