About The Position

MidAmerica Nazarene University (MNU), a Christian University in Olathe, KS and a member of the Heart of America Conference and the NAIA, is seeking a full-time, 10-month Assistant Track & Field/Throws Coach. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in leading student-athletes, exemplify MNU's principles, and possess intercollegiate administrative experience. This role requires strong leadership, a commitment to sportsmanship and academics, and the ability to foster a positive student-athlete experience.

Requirements

  • Successful experience coaching or competing in the throwing events.
  • Ability to recruit and retain new student-athletes and maintain consistent roster numbers.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in a manner consistent with professional standards.
  • Ability to make oral presentations to groups and contribute to the development of high-quality written materials.
  • Ability to consistently demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with persons both internal and external to the University, both on the telephone and in person.
  • Ability to remain calm in crisis situations, act decisively, and apply sound judgment.
  • Ability to prioritize and deal with several tasks concurrently, while maintaining flexibility, high energy, creativity, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to quickly and easily get to know many students.
  • Ability to use new technologies to accomplish team and departmental goals.
  • Ability to assist in organizing travel preparations.
  • Ability to assist in driving vehicles.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Three to five years of significant, progressive, and responsible experience in coaching required.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to the Christian faith.
  • Active participation in a local church.
  • Philosophy of Christian higher education consistent with the Wesleyan tradition.

Nice To Haves

  • Collegiate-level coaching experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coach and instruct student-athletes in the various disciplines of the throwing events within the Track & Field program.
  • Assist with instruction to maximize student-athlete knowledge, time, effort, safety, and skill.
  • Promote the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletic program.
  • Provide assistance with the academic goals and objectives of the team.
  • Ensure the safety and welfare of team members at all fitness levels, working closely with athletic training staff to confirm physical exams, health insurance, and athletic training needs are met.
  • Recruit and retain outstanding student-athletes for the MNU Track & Field/Cross Country program who excel academically.
  • Coordinate contacts with recruits and their families.
  • Participate in planning and implementing pre-season training programs and team practices.
  • Monitor and encourage the academic progress of student-athletes, aiming for graduation.
  • Counsel student-athletes as needed in academic, disciplinary, and personal matters, consulting with Student Services personnel.
  • Represent the athletic department at professional, civic, charitable, and alumni events as requested.
  • Assist with coordinating community service projects, leadership training, and outreach activities as part of the NAIA’s Champions of Character program.
  • Administer program budget, analyze funding needs, fulfill yearly report requests, and plan fundraising activities as directed by the head coach/director.
  • Commit to the highest ethical and professional standards.
  • Perform other duties as appointed by the Director of Track and Field.
