About The Position

Emory University's Department of Environmental Sciences (ENVS) is seeking an Assistant Teaching Professor in Applied Environmental Social Sciences for a teaching-track position starting August 1, 2027. This role focuses on engaging students with the social, political, economic, and cultural aspects of environmental challenges, emphasizing applied approaches in teaching and research. The position is a renewable three-year appointment with opportunities for promotion. The ideal candidate will strengthen teaching in environmental institutions, governance, and policy, bring environmental social science perspectives to the curriculum, critically examine issues of power and inequality, contribute to field studies and experiential learning by integrating social and biophysical approaches, and foster interdisciplinary connections across social and natural sciences in areas like water, energy, or sustainability.

Requirements

• PhD in Geography, Environmental Studies, Environmental Science(s), or a related social science or interdisciplinary environmental field.
• Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching in an innovative interdisciplinary environment.
• Independent teaching experience as instructor of record at the undergraduate level, with evidence of teaching effectiveness.
• Evidence of effective student mentorship or potential to mentor undergraduate students.
• Evidence of potential to contribute to an interdisciplinary and collaborative academic community.

Responsibilities

• Teach five undergraduate environmental social science courses per year, including ENVS 225 (Institutions and the Environment) and other courses in the Social Science and Policy curriculum.
• Contribute to the Department’s interdisciplinary and field-based teaching, including ENVS 131 (Introduction to Field Studies).
• Mentor undergraduate students, including through honors theses, directed readings, and independent research.
• Collaborate with faculty and students across the Department and University, and contribute to the Department’s intellectual and academic community.
