About The Position

Oxford College, Emory University’s residential liberal arts college, invites applications for two full-time Assistant Teaching Professor positions in Biology beginning August 1, 2027. The college seeks broadly trained biologists committed to excellent undergraduate teaching, particularly candidates who regard introductory biology as an intellectually important part of the curriculum and can help first- and second-year students develop foundational biological knowledge, scientific reasoning skills, and confidence in engaging with scientific evidence. Successful candidates will teach lecture and laboratory sections in Oxford’s two-semester introductory biology sequence, covering topics from cell structures and cellular respiration through molecular processes, genetics, gene expression, and evolution. Other teaching responsibilities include contributing to the first-year Discovery Seminar program and may include elective courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, courses supporting student research experience, or courses in Oxford’s General Education Program. The standard teaching load is two lecture sections and two laboratory sections per semester, or the equivalent. These are teaching-track faculty appointments on long-term contracts, with full faculty governance rights and responsibilities and a path to promotion to Associate and Full Teaching Professor. Excellence in teaching is the primary responsibility. Faculty are also expected to participate in program administration, advising, and service. Independent research productivity and peer-reviewed publications are not required. Candidates may facilitate authentic scientific inquiry through course-based undergraduate research experiences or student research projects where appropriate and feasible.

Requirements

  • MSc in biology or a related field completed by the start of the appointment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching.
  • Broad biological knowledge sufficient to teach both courses in Oxford’s introductory biology sequence, including associated laboratory sections.
  • Commitment to teaching and mentoring first- and second-year students from a variety of backgrounds.

  • Expertise that supports field-based, ecological, or organismal approaches to biology.
  • Expertise that supports computational, bioinformatic, or quantitative approaches to biology.
  • Interest in using Oxford College resources such as the greenhouse, Organic Farm, or field settings.
  • Experience teaching, mentoring, or advising first- and second-year undergraduate students.
  • Expertise in plant science or interests suited to field-based, greenhouse-based, or computational approaches.

Responsibilities

  • Teach lecture and laboratory sections in Oxford’s two-semester introductory biology sequence.

  • Help first- and second-year students develop biological knowledge, scientific reasoning skills, and confidence engaging with scientific evidence.
  • Participate in program administration, advising, and service duties.
  • Where appropriate and feasible, facilitate authentic scientific inquiry through course-based undergraduate research experiences or supervision of student research projects.
