About The Position

The Department of History at Santa Clara University (SCU), a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for a full-time, renewable, non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor of Islamic and Middle Eastern History. The role primarily involves teaching core classes such as Cultures and Ideas 1, 2, and 3, as well as upper-division courses in the history of the Islamic world and the Middle East. SCU is a welcoming and inclusive community of teaching scholars grounded in academic excellence, social justice, and community engagement, with a culture of care. Located in Silicon Valley, the university leverages the resources of the greater Bay Area. The successful candidate will start on September 1, 2026. This is primarily a teaching position, with expected engagement in professional activity (15%) and service (15%) for the department, college, and university. SCU operates on the quarter system, with an expected teaching load of seven undergraduate courses over three academic quarters. Initial appointments are for three years, with potential for reappointment based on funding, programmatic need, and performance. Promotion to Associate Teaching Professor and Teaching Professor is possible under the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The History Department is an undergraduate-only program, and experience working with diverse student groups is valued.

Requirements

  • Terminal degree (PhD) in History or a related field by appointment start date.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching university-level courses in modern Middle East politics and society.
  • Demonstrated potential for effective and inclusive teaching and mentoring of a diverse undergraduate student population.
  • Ability to teach the following courses is especially valued: War and Peace in the Modern Middle East, Islam in the Modern World, Cultures of Islam (Cultures and Ideas 1-2 sequence).

Responsibilities

  • Teach lower- and upper-division courses in the major and university core curriculum, as assigned by the chair, including courses such as War and Peace in the Modern Middle East, Islam in the Modern World, Cultures of Islam (Cultures and Ideas 1-2 sequence).
  • Engage in professional activity, which for non-tenure track faculty on the Teaching Professor track refers to scholarly or creative work, professional practice, or other active engagement in a discipline or field that enables a faculty member to remain current in that area and vital as a teacher.
  • Provide effective service to the Department of History, the College of Arts and Sciences, the University, and the profession through contributions other than teaching and scholarship, such as service on committees, participation in professional organizations and activities, leadership, and community service performed by virtue of professional expertise or association with the university, as appropriate to rank and experience.
