About The Position

Our Assistant Teacher is primarily responsible for assisting with student instruction and behavioral supports in the Minnick Schools – a system of private day schools for students with special needs. We are looking for motivated individuals that desire to affect positive change in young people’s lives through daily classroom and community-based instruction. This role requires driving, therefore a "clean driving record" is critical.

Requirements

• High School diploma/ GED with minimum of one year’s experience in working with students who receive special education services, mental health and/or other direct services.
• Basic computer skills and experience working with Microsoft Office.
• Valid Virginia Drivers’ License and proof of insurance if assigned driver.
• Satisfactory Driving Record.
• Must not have any of the following violations within the last 5 years: Reckless driving, including speeding 20mph or more over the posted speed limit; Driving under the influence/impaired/intoxicated or refusing a blood/breath test; Manslaughter or negligent homicide; Driving after being declared a habitual offender; Driving on a suspended or revoked license; Driving a commercial motor vehicle while disqualified, under the influence, with a blood alcohol level of .04 or higher, refusing a blood/breath test, or violating an out-of-service order; Injuring a person while racing - felony; Failure to stop at the scene of a crash where there is injury, death, or property damage of $1000 or more; Emergency vehicle violation - death; Vehicular assault or willful stopping, impeding, or damaging a vehicle; Blocking access to the service facility; Attempting to elude police; Operating an unsafe vehicle; Vulnerable Road User – Death.
• Must not have any of the following violations within the last 3 years: Passing a stopped school bus; Careless driving; Three or more minor moving violations within the last three years.

Responsibilities

• Assist teacher with classroom management, academic instruction, and behavioral support.
• Implement behavior intervention plans and strategies as directed.
• With provided training, obtain Safety Care certification, and implement Safety Care strategies to respond to and de-escalate negative behaviors.
• Maintains student records and assigned documentation in a timely manner.
• Maintains confidentiality of student and school personnel information.
• Maintains professional boundaries in all interactions with students and staff.
• Assists classroom teacher with supervision of students. Provides instruction and supervision of students when the teacher is not present.
• Attends staff meetings, parent meetings, IEP meetings as requested.
• Attends work regularly and arrives in a timely fashion.
• Communicates professionally and conveys dignity and respect to students, parents, co-workers, and other professionals.
