About The Position

Under the administrative direction of the Education & Early Childhood Services Manager and the Classroom Teacher and directly supervised by the ECE Coordinator/Site Supervisor the Abbott Teacher’s Assistant/Floater ensures age and developmentally appropriate activities for all children. This is a temporary position for the 2026-2027 School Year, with an assignment length of 3 to 4 months. The schedule is typically 08:30 AM – 03:30 PM, with up to two early arrivals (8:00 AM) and up to two late departures (4:00 PM) per month for staff meetings and/or trainings. The role is located at Head Start Preschool Centers in Trenton, New Jersey.

Requirements

  • A state-awarded certificate (i.e. Paraprofessional Certificate), or an associate’s degree (60 college credits) - Early Childhood Education preferred.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification required.
  • Experience teaching pre-school children, preferably in Head Start/Early Head Start classrooms.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience working with preschool aged children and families.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Teacher in planning and implementing a comprehensive program including CHSofNJ HS curriculum, and Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Work in a team setting with all staff to determine individual needs of the children.
  • Assist the Teacher with set up and maintenance of an appropriate classroom environment, including organization of space and material storage.
  • Help supervise field trips and recreational activities.
  • Assist the Teacher in planning and participate in classroom activities with children.
  • Recommend ways of utilizing parent volunteers in the classroom and in other program activities.
  • Greet parents and children pleasantly and appropriately, ensuring a smooth transition into the classroom, a positive home-classroom connection and a family partnership.
  • Provide activities parents can do at home with their children to support the curriculum and the child’s learning.
  • Maintain ongoing professional and appropriate communication with parents.
  • Encourage parents to become involved in workshops, training and other Head Start activities.
  • Assist the Teacher in demonstrating to parents effective ways to reinforce the children’s needs in the home.
  • Maintain accurate child attendance records, USDA food records/reports, in-kind reports and other record keeping and reports as required.
  • Keep all assigned records regarding classroom operations/children current and updated.
