About The Position

This is a position-specific recruitment for an Assistant Section Manager in the Returns Processing Section at the Comptroller of Maryland. This role is within the Management Service and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority. The position is located in Annapolis, Maryland. The Returns Processing Section is a dynamic, fast-paced, high-volume environment requiring strong attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple high-level tasks, and meet deadlines. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, adaptability to change, and the ability to motivate a team to achieve high levels of accurate and efficient production. This role directly supervises the Data Capture and Scanning Unit, Document Control Unit, and Error Correction Unit. A key responsibility is to learn and perform the duties of the Section Manager in their absence, which includes processing multiple tax types in a constantly evolving work environment.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four year college or university.
  • Five years of professional experience in auditing, accounting, the practice of tax law, or general management.
  • Three years of this experience must have involved supervising professional accountants or auditors; giving legal advice requiring the interpretation of tax laws in the capacity of a tax attorney; or must have been in a responsible administrative or management capacity sufficient to demonstrate capabilities of performing responsible staff work.
  • Candidates may substitute an additional four years of experience for the required education.
  • For education obtained outside of the U.S., proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service is required.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of state and federal tax forms, laws, rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge and experience working in COM Systems, including GPE tax system, BobJ/Data Warehouse, MeF and Service Now.
  • Proficient working in MS Suite of Application, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience leading training (one-on-one and group settings).
  • Experience with handling large volumes of work and prioritizing.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Direct supervision and daily operations of the Data Capture and Scanning Unit, Document Control Unit, and Error Correction Unit.
  • Learning the duties of the Section Manager and effectively performing those duties in the absence of the Section Manager.
  • Processing of multiple tax types in a fast-paced and constantly evolving work environment.
