About The Position

The Assistant Safety Director helps maintain a safe and secure environment at a transitional housing shelter in Brooklyn, New York, providing temporary housing for men living with diagnosed mental illnesses. Working with the Safety Director, the role helps plan, organize, and direct a 24-hour, 7-day-per-week safety program that protects clients, staff, and visitors. Safety staff are often residents’ first point of contact and help create a welcoming environment.

Requirements

• New York State Security Guard License, F-02, and FDNY F-80.
• High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent experience and skills.
• At least three years of security experience in a shelter environment.
• Prior supervisory experience.
• Ability to work with people experiencing homelessness and mental illness or other disadvantaged people.
• Strong customer service orientation and ability to manage interpersonal relationships skillfully.
• Strong time-management and organizational skills.
• Computer literacy with Microsoft applications.
• Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as needed.

• Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Responsibilities

• Supervise Safety Tour Leaders by setting priorities, communicating expectations, and providing ongoing feedback and guidance.
• Work with the Safety Director to recruit, hire, and orient new safety staff.
• Ensure adequate staffing coverage by setting work schedules, approving time-off requests, and addressing time and attendance issues.
• Plan and facilitate team meetings, hold regular individual supervision sessions, and promote accountability for safety team goals and values.
• Assist the Safety Director and others in developing and presenting training activities for safety staff.
• Prepare and submit required administrative reports on time, including incident reports and employee counseling forms.
• Serve as Fire and Safety Director in the Safety Director’s absence.
