Community Access, founded in 1974, is a pioneer in supportive housing and social services for individuals with mental health concerns in NYC. The organization advocates for human rights, social justice, and economic opportunities. Their programs include supportive housing, the Howie the Harp Advocacy Center, a Peer-driven Crisis Respite Center, Adult Home Initiative, Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), and the Intensive Mobile Team (IMT), spread across 25 locations and over 1200 units of housing in three boroughs. The Residential Crisis Support (RCS) program, also known as "The Respite," is a residential mental health crisis alternative to hospitalization. It offers short-term, Peer-led care in a supportive, home-like environment. Guests can learn and practice recovery and relapse prevention skills to manage their current crisis and develop tools to cope with future crises, thereby avoiding hospital-based care. Recovery-oriented services are available 24/7, including peer support, self-advocacy education, and self-help training. The program supports guests in maintaining their daily activities like visiting friends, attending appointments, or going to work or school. Guests are encouraged to participate in the residence's operations, such as preparing communal meals. The maximum length of stay is 28 days.
