About The Position

The Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in urban sustainability, starting July 1, 2027. This role will complement and contribute to the Department’s expertise in human geography. The ideal candidate will be a scholar whose research and teaching focus on urban environmental change, emphasizing social, political, and/or economic responses to building resilient cities. The University of Ottawa is a leading bilingual university located in Canada's capital.

Requirements

  • Possess a doctorate (Ph.D.) by July 1, 2027 in Geography or a related discipline.
  • Excellent communication skills in English or French.
  • Active knowledge of Canada’s two official languages (French and English) is a requirement for tenure.
  • Evidence of an established and innovative research program and a record of refereed publications and scholarly conferences.
  • An ability to attract external funding.
  • Evidence of successful teaching at a post-secondary institution.

Nice To Haves

  • English-French bilingualism is an asset.
  • Experience attracting and supervising graduate students is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in both French and English.
  • Conducting scholarly activities, research, and knowledge mobilization.
  • Engaging in academic service and administration of the department.
  • Recruiting and supervising students.
  • Establishing a rigorous research program that includes grants from major funding agencies or a clear plan to develop one.
  • Teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, in English and French.
