About The Position

The Department of Economics at San José State University is seeking an Assistant Professor of Economics to begin in August 2027. This position is particularly interested in candidates with research and teaching interests in Urban Economics, Regional Economics, and Spatial Data Analysis. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, conducting research, involving students in applied projects, supervising student research, and collaborating with colleagues. A demonstrated ability or strong potential to secure external research funding is highly desirable. The Department of Economics, within the College of Social Sciences, serves approximately 340 undergraduate and 30 graduate students, with a diverse student body. The department offers BS and BA degrees in Economics, an SJSU Online BA, a Minor in Economics, an MA in Economics, and an MA in Applied Economics, with STEM-designated BS and MA programs. The department comprises 7 tenured faculty and 15 lecturer faculty with expertise in various economic fields, including a unique Experimental Economics Lab. The College of Social Sciences is committed to equitable and inclusive teaching and learning, focusing on faculty and student success through culturally-sustaining approaches and supporting engagement with campus and community issues. Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Economics expected by the date of the appointment.
  • Demonstrated record of effective teaching.
  • Demonstration of research potential and an established agenda for future research.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population, as evidenced through cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or comparable experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Research focuses in one or more of the following fields: Urban Economics, Regional Economics, and Spatial Economics.
  • Experience in spatial data analysis (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and other computational tools.
  • Commitment to student success and inclusive pedagogy.
  • Record of teaching excellence and relevant teaching experience serving diverse student populations.
  • Commitment to or experience in securing external funding.
  • Ability to teach a broad range of undergraduate and graduate economics courses.

Responsibilities

  • Teach and develop curriculum in areas of specialization as well as core economics courses.
  • Advise and mentor both undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Maintain an active research agenda and contribute to the advancement of the discipline through peer-reviewed scholarship and professional engagement.
  • Participate in shared governance, including Department, College, and University committees and other service assignments.
  • Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Demonstrate awareness and experience in understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
  • Comply with mandated reporter requirements under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
  • Complete Clery Act training and report Clery incidents if designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
  • Complete assigned CSU employee training (e.g., Data Security, FERPA, Preventing Discrimination and Harassment, Title IX, Health and Safety).
  • Comply with safety measures as recommended or required by the President, including those related to COVID-19 transmission.
