About The Position

The Department of Classics in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a one-year full-time contractually limited-term appointment (CLTA) in the area of Greek Language and Literature. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2026. Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Classics or a related area by the date of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. Candidates must present clear evidence of an excellent teaching record and have the demonstrated capacity successfully to teach, at all undergraduate levels, translation-based courses on ancient Greek literature and culture and language courses in ancient Greek. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research, and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates must also have excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills as demonstrated in their application materials.

Requirements

  • Earned a PhD degree in Classics or a related area by the date of appointment or shortly thereafter
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching
  • Clear evidence of an excellent teaching record
  • Demonstrated capacity successfully to teach, at all undergraduate levels, translation-based courses on ancient Greek literature and culture and language courses in ancient Greek
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills as demonstrated in their application materials
  • Evidence of excellence in research, which may be demonstrated by an established or emerging record of refereed publications, conference presentations, grants and awards, the submitted research statement, and strong recommendations by referees of high standing
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference, and a teaching dossier including a statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, teaching evaluations or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities
