About The Position

The Department of Classics in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto is seeking applications for a one-year full-time contractually limited-term appointment (CLTA) in Greek and Roman Literature and Cultural History. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2026. Applicants must hold a PhD in Classics or a related field by the appointment date and demonstrate excellence in both research and teaching. The role requires the ability to teach translation-based courses in ancient Greek and Roman cultural history and language courses in ancient Greek and Latin at all undergraduate levels. Candidates' research and teaching interests should align with and enhance the department's existing strengths. The position also entails pursuing innovative, independent research and establishing a competitive, externally funded research program. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills are essential.

Requirements

  • Earned a PhD degree in Classics or a related area by the date of appointment or shortly thereafter
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching
  • Clear evidence of an excellent teaching record
  • Demonstrated capacity successfully to teach, at all undergraduate levels, translation-based courses in ancient Greek and Roman cultural history and language courses in ancient Greek and Latin
  • Research and teaching interests complement and enhance existing departmental strengths
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Evidence of excellence in research, demonstrated by an established or emerging record of refereed publications, conference presentations, grants and awards, a submitted research statement, and strong recommendations by referees of high standing
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching, provided through teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference, and a teaching dossier including a statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, teaching evaluations or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities (e.g., performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or excellent conference presentations or posters)
