About The Position

The Faculty of Information and the Department of Italian, Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Italian cultural studies and history. This is a joint appointment (60% Faculty of Information, 40% Department of Italian, Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies) at the rank of Associate Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026. The role requires expertise in fascism and far right movements in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries; archival and historiographic methodologies; and the interplay of monuments, museums and memory studies. The successful candidate will be a leader in global and comparative research in these areas, including how ideologies are represented and contested in monuments and museums, how they relate to (mis)information in the public sphere, memory studies related to national narratives and heritage, and methodological expertise in archival research and historiography. The position also involves playing a leading role in envisioning, developing, and deploying innovative degree pathways between undergraduate and professional master programs. Requirements

  • Hold a doctoral degree in Information Science, Museum Studies, History, Anthropology, Area Studies, Cultural Studies, Media and Communication or Journalism Studies, or Memory Studies
  • Expertise in Italian cultural studies and history with expertise in fascism and far right movements in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries
  • Expertise in archival and historiographic methodologies
  • Expertise in the interplay of monuments, museums and memory studies
  • Expertise in Italian cultural studies and cultural history, especially as it relates to neighbouring states in the Mediterranean
  • Clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research
  • Clearly demonstrated record of excellence in teaching
  • Robust teaching dossier that includes undergraduate and graduate level teaching, as well as supervision of students (undergraduate, masters and/or PhD)
  • Proven track record of administrative efficacy and leadership commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor
  • Established international reputation
  • Evidence of research excellence demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations), as well as strong letters of reference
  • Demonstrated a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment through their application materials
  • Submit a statement of contributions to equity and diversity

Responsibilities

  • Play a leading role in envisioning, developing, and deploying innovative degree pathways between undergraduate and professional master programs
  • Curriculum development and renewal at undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Undergraduate humanities and social science teaching
  • Professional masters teaching, especially in the areas of GLAMs (Galleries, Archives, Libraries, and Museums)
  • Administrative leadership, including stakeholder engagement and consultation, effective communication, and positive faculty-staff working relationships
  • Inter-divisional collaboration
  • Understanding and applying University policies and governance processes
  • Sustain and lead innovative and independent research
  • Maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program
  • Supervision of students (undergraduate, masters and/or PhD)
