The University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking a tenure-track forensic science faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2027. The successful candidate will join the J. Frank Barefield, Jr. Department of Criminal Justice in the College of Arts and Sciences and contribute to UAB’s Master of Science in Forensic Science program. The program is one of fewer than 25 FEPAC-accredited Master of Science in Forensic Science programs in the United States. Established in the mid-1980s, it has been accredited since 2008. Its facilities include chemistry laboratories with two gas chromatography–mass spectrometry instruments and an HPLC time-of-flight mass spectrometer with DART capabilities, purchased in 2025, as well as a dedicated teaching laboratory supporting trace evidence and comparison sciences. The program prepares students for careers in forensic and conventional analytical laboratories, emphasizing scientific methods and technologies in legal proceedings. The department offers undergraduate programs in Criminal Justice and Digital Forensics, master’s programs in Criminal Justice and Forensic Science, and undergraduate minors in Legal Affairs, Urban Affairs, Forensic Psychology, and Forensic Science. It has approximately 300 undergraduate majors, 50 Criminal Justice and Forensic Science master’s students, and 15 full-time faculty members. Applications received by November 30, 2026, will receive full consideration. Review will continue until the position is filled. Applicants must submit a cover letter explaining how their qualifications and experience prepare them for the position, a curriculum vitae, an approximately two-page research statement addressing research from the past five years and future plans, an approximately two-page teaching philosophy statement, and names and contact information for three references. Additional evidence of teaching excellence is optional.
