Assistant Professor Tenure-Track Faculty

University of Minnesota-Twin Cities•Minneapolis, MN

About The Position

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Computer Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or Optics and Photonics. The salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. In Computer Engineering, areas of interest include chip design and verification, electronic design automation, computer architecture, and emerging computing platforms such as AI/ML hardware, heterogeneous integration, quantum computing, and physics-inspired computing. Relevant applications include AI/ML accelerator design, AI/ML for chip design and verification, domain-specific computing, heterogeneous architectures, hardware-algorithm co-design, quantum computing, and physics-inspired computing. In Artificial Intelligence, areas of interest include AI and machine-learning algorithms, theory, and applications. Theoretical topics include optimization, neural networks, and reinforcement learning; application areas include robotics, foundation models, image and signal processing, optimization, and control. In Optics and Photonics, areas of interest include optics, photonics, nanophotonics, quantum optics, optical materials, devices, instrumentation, and systems. Examples include integrated and nanoscale photonics, metasurfaces, plasmonics, micro/nanofabrication, biophotonics and optical biosensing, optical imaging and spectroscopy, optical measurement and sensing science and instrumentation, optoelectronics and silicon photonics, optical communications and interconnects, and optical computing. Candidates whose work connects optics and photonics with emerging areas such as quantum technologies or computing, packaging, neuroengineering, biomedical diagnostics, high-power devices or systems, or AI-enabled systems are particularly encouraged. Demonstrated micro- and/or nanofabrication ability is desirable, and candidates are expected to make extensive use of the Minnesota Nano Center cleanroom facilities. Successful candidates are expected to establish a vigorous, funded research program; engage in research and publication; develop external funding proposals; collaborate with academic, industry, and other research partners; teach undergraduate and graduate courses; advise students; and contribute service to the department, University, profession, and outreach activities. An earned doctorate or equivalent foreign degree in an appropriate discipline, with PhD completion, is required at the time of appointment. The anticipated appointment start is Fall 2027. Applications are accepted until the position is filled; the priority deadline for full consideration is November 26, 2026.
