The Ohio State University's motto, 'education for citizenship,' is central to its mission. In 2023, the State of Ohio established the Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture, and Society at Ohio State. This multidisciplinary center focuses on teaching, research, and public programming related to Western civilization's core texts and debates, the principles of the American and Ohio political order, and the foundations of responsible leadership and informed citizenship. The Center is an independent academic unit and a leader among similar institutions nationwide. It is dedicated to conducting teaching and research in the historical ideas, traditions, and texts that have shaped the American constitutional order and society. The Center has already established its first classes and degrees, hosted public programming, built a strong student community (the Chase Society), supported K-12 schools, and secured significant financial backing. The faculty are public-spirited scholars committed to fostering an academic community where civic life and intellectual pursuits thrive. They are expected to contribute to their disciplines, teach and mentor students, model collegiality, and serve the University and the wider Ohio community, all while embracing the Center's mission.
