About The Position
The Department of American Culture and Society at the University of Alabama is seeking a dynamic scholar for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position, specializing in American Studies, to begin in Fall 2027. The successful candidate will join the Department of American Culture and Society as a tenure-track faculty member. Responsibilities include teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses, maintaining an active research agenda, and performing professional service commensurate with the rank and position. The department was formed in January 2026 by merging the Departments of Gender and Race Studies and American Studies. It offers BA and MA programs with a history of over forty years at the University. The department provides an undergraduate major in African American Studies and American Studies, minors in these areas, an undergraduate minor in Women's Studies, MA programs in Women's Studies and American Studies, and a minor in Sociology. The department serves over 11,000 students annually. Graduates from the MA programs in American Studies and Women's Studies have successfully pursued PhD programs, worked in non-profit organizations, or completed advanced professional degrees. This is an interdisciplinary department that fosters collaboration through writing groups, seminars, and a speaker series. The regular teaching load is two courses per semester. The position is tenure-earning, with expectations for research, teaching, and service to meet tenure and promotion requirements.
Requirements
- A PhD completed before August 16th, 2027 is a requirement for employment at the announced rank and position.
- A PhD in hand at time of employment in a relevant discipline is required for the position.
