About The Position

The Department of Special Education at San José State University is seeking candidates for an Assistant Professor of Special Education position beginning in August 2027. This role involves teaching in the Master of Arts (MA) in Special Education and Education Specialist Credential programs, contributing to undergraduate, credential, and MA degree pathways. The department is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in working with bilingual students from diverse backgrounds with Mild to Moderate disabilities. The Department of Special Education, within the Lurie College of Education, focuses on preparing transformative special educators who can create equitable and inclusive environments. The department offers an MA in Special Education and three Education Specialist credential programs, accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. They have strong collaborations with over 40 school districts and operate three Teacher Residency Programs. Additionally, the department partners with other departments for blended BA to MA programs that include the Education Specialist credential. Requirements

PhD or EdD in Special Education or related field
Demonstrated potential for research and scholarly writing
Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population, as evidenced by cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or comparable experience.

Nice To Haves

Minimum of three years of public school teaching experience with bilingual students with mild to moderate disabilities in K-12 settings
Ability and interest in supporting teacher candidates earning a bilingual authorization, including field supervision in bilingual settings
Ability and interest in teaching and/or advising dissertations for doctoral students in Lurie College’s EdD program.
Strong potential for research and scholarly work in the field of bilingual special education, as evidenced by publications in professional journals, grant proposals, or conference presentations.

Responsibilities

Teach a range of courses in the Department of Special Education, potentially including Master’s, credential, and/or undergraduate students.
Maintain an active scholarly agenda as necessary for tenure and promotion.
Provide service to the Department of Special Education, including advising students, curriculum development, assessment and accreditation tasks, and recruitment activities.
Guide advisement for the Department’s bilingual authorization program.
Participate in shared governance, including department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
Demonstrate awareness and experience in understanding the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
Comply with mandated reporter requirements under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
Complete Clery Act training and report Clery incidents if designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
Complete assigned and required CSU employee training (e.g., Data Security, FERPA, Preventing Discrimination and Harassment, Title IX, Health and Safety).
