Assistant Professor of Special Education
About The Position
The Department of Special Education at San José State University is seeking an Assistant Professor of Special Education to begin in August 2027. This role involves teaching and scholarly research within the Master of Arts (MA) in Special Education and Education Specialist Credential programs. The department is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in supporting bilingual students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds with Mild to Moderate disabilities. The Department of Special Education, part of the Lurie College of Education, focuses on preparing transformative special educators who can create equitable and inclusive environments. The department offers an MA in Special Education and three accredited Education Specialist credential programs, serving over 40 school districts and operating three Teacher Residency Programs. They also partner with other departments for blended BA to MA programs. Requirements
- PhD or EdD in Special Education or related field
- Demonstrated potential for research and scholarly writing
- Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population, as evidenced by cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or comparable experience.
Nice To Haves
- Minimum of three years of public school teaching experience with bilingual students with mild to moderate disabilities in K-12 settings
- Ability and interest in supporting teacher candidates earning a bilingual authorization, including field supervision in bilingual settings
- Ability and interest in teaching and/or advising dissertations for doctoral students in Lurie College’s EdD program.
- Strong potential for research and scholarly work in the field of bilingual special education, as evidenced by publications in professional journals, grant proposals, or conference presentations.
Responsibilities
- Teach a range of courses in the Department of Special Education, including Master’s, credential, and/or undergraduate levels.
- Maintain an active scholarly agenda necessary for tenure and promotion.
- Provide service to the Department of Special Education, including student advising, curriculum development, assessment and accreditation tasks, and recruitment activities, with a specific focus on guiding advisement for the Department’s bilingual authorization program.
- Participate in shared governance through department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
- Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
- Demonstrate awareness and experience in understanding the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
