About The Position

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), a member of The Texas A&M University System, is seeking an Assistant Professor of Petroleum Engineering with a specialization in Drilling Engineering to commence employment in Fall 2027. TAMIU, a Hispanic-Serving Institution located in Laredo, Texas, is dedicated to advancing knowledge through research, teaching, community engagement, and public service, with a strong emphasis on student success and research excellence. This is a tenure-track, nine-month position with a reduced teaching load to support research development. The primary responsibilities include establishing an independent, externally funded research program in drilling engineering, teaching drilling engineering courses and associated laboratories, and mentoring student research and senior design projects. The role also involves teaching other Petroleum Engineering and engineering courses, supporting recruitment and accreditation efforts, engaging in School service, and fostering collaborations with academic, industry, and government partners. This position requires regular on-campus presence and face-to-face interactions. The School of Engineering, which offers ABET-accredited programs, is expanding its faculty capacity to accommodate significant enrollment growth in Petroleum Engineering, as part of a strategic initiative to hire ten new permanent faculty members starting Fall 2027.

Requirements

  • Hold a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering or a closely related discipline by the appointment start date (applicants nearing completion may be considered if the degree is awarded before appointment).
  • Demonstrate expertise in drilling engineering through research, scholarship, professional experience, or a combination thereof.
  • Be able to teach drilling engineering courses and associated laboratories, including the use of drilling simulation equipment.
  • Mentor student research.
  • Establish an independent research program in drilling engineering.
  • Demonstrate strength in one or more drilling areas: fluids and cementing; well planning, design, and control; managed-pressure or underbalanced drilling; well integrity and lost-circulation control; drilling optimization; or drilling and well construction for geothermal, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), hydrogen storage, or other emerging subsurface-energy applications.
