About The Position

The University of Chicago, Division of the Social Sciences, Department of Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of assistant professor for an initial 4 year renewable term. This is a full-time position with an expected start date on or after July 1, 2027. We intend to appoint a scholar in the humanities or social sciences whose research examines historical or contemporary migrations, displacements, and diasporas. The scope of this search is resolutely global, and we encourage applications from scholars who examine the contours of race, Indigeneity, and migration in or between the broader Americas, Mediterranean, Asia, Pacific, Indian Ocean, or the African continent. We welcome applicants from a range of methodological traditions including qualitative and quantitative social sciences, archival and oral historical approaches, literary and performance studies. Successful candidates will maintain a research and teaching agenda that centers questions of race and/or Indigeneity as foundational, rather than ancillary, to the study of migration and the intellectual project of the Department of Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity. The selected candidate will pursue their own research agenda, collaborate with faculty in the Department of Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity and other areas of the Division of the Social Sciences and University, and teach in both the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. The teaching load for tenure-track positions is typically four courses per year on the quarter system, including in the University’s College Core curriculum. Additional responsibilities include advising at all levels of the program, and service on departmental and university committees. This position is benefits-eligible. About the Department Founded in 2022, the Department of Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity (RDI) is home to an interdisciplinary group of scholars whose work engages the conceptual pillars of the unit. RDI is housed in the Social Sciences at the University but is committed to working across the social sciences, humanities, sciences, professional schools, and the arts to build a truly interdisciplinary, outward-facing department. RDI values community-engaged and informed work. We currently offer a robust undergraduate curriculum (including a major and a minor) and a graduate certificate. We are preparing to launch a PhD program in the coming years. Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must possess a terminal Degree in hand by the start of the appointment in a relevant field.
