About The Position

California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) is seeking an Assistant Professor of Translation Studies. This position is within the College of Liberal Arts, Department of Romance, German, Russian Languages and Literatures. CSULB is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) committed to serving diverse students and promoting inclusive excellence. The department is expanding graduate education in Translation and Interpreting, with a new MA program launching in Fall 2027. The successful candidate will contribute to this new MA program, collaborate with faculty, support partnerships, and prepare multilingual students for evolving careers in translation, interpreting, and global communication.

Requirements

Ph.D. in Translation Studies, Applied Linguistics, Comparative Literature, or a closely related field. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2027.
Demonstrated proficiency in English and at least two of the following Romance languages: French, Italian, and Spanish, with the ability to teach translation between English and those languages
Formal training and professional experience in translation
Background or formal training in interpreting
Experience teaching translation theory and practice at the university level
Demonstrated expertise in computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, machine translation, and post-editing workflows
Evidence of scholarly publication and an active research agenda in Translation Studies or a related field
Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including low socioeconomic and first-generation students

Experience training professional translators in academic or industry settings
Experience supervising graduate research, including MA theses
Experience in academic program or curriculum development
Experience adapting curricula to emerging technologies, professional standards, and global market changes
Record of international collaboration and established professional networks within the translation and interpreting community
Experience successfully working with populations demographically and/or socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body
Experience mentoring or supporting students using inclusive and culturally relevant teaching strategies in a diverse classroom

Responsibilities

Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Translation Studies, including translation theory and methodology; literary translation in English-French, English-Italian, and English-Spanish language pairs; specialized and professional translation; CAT tools; machine translation and post-editing; and translator training and professional practice. (Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.)
Integrate interpreting studies into translation curricula where appropriate and collaborate with faculty in interpreting in the MA in Translation and Interpreting
Design and update courses to reflect emerging technologies, evolving markets, current industry standards, and innovative technology-enhanced pedagogies
Mentor students and supervise MA theses in Translation Studies and related areas
Maintain an active research and scholarly agenda in Translation Studies or a related field, including applied research where appropriate
Maintain professional engagement as a translator and/or interpreter and develop partnerships with professionals, agencies, associations, and universities
Facilitate internships, professional placements, industry collaborations, and other career-connected opportunities for students
Participate in department, college, and university service, including program review, strategic planning, outreach, and continuing professional education
