About The Position

Nominations and applications are invited for the position of Assistant Professor of Leadership. The area of specialization is open, however experience or interest in the area of Community Leadership, and Inclusive Leadership is desirable. This is a full-time, tenure-track position to begin July 30, 2027 and will serve graduate and undergraduate programs in the Department of Leadership. The person hired for this position will have the opportunity to manage a dynamic and innovative curriculum in the role of Graduate Program Coordinator starting in the 2nd year of employment. The Department of Leadership is a collegial environment housed within the College of Behavioral and Health Sciences. Our mission is to offer online academic programs that address leadership-related theory, research, and practice grounded in the social and behavioral sciences, thereby helping students develop the leadership competencies needed to become formal or informal leaders and advance their careers in varied employment settings. At the undergraduate level, we offer a Bachelor of Science in Leadership along with a minor in Leadership Science. At the graduate level, we offer a Master of Science in Leadership with three concentrations: Strategic Leadership, Community Leadership, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The department also offers five graduate certificate programs, including: Community & Organizational Leadership; Conflict Resolution & Negotiation; Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion in the Workplace; Grant Writing; Leading Organizational Change. The department is also involved in co-curricular efforts, including sponsorship of APSU’s Chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success. Teaching responsibilities may include undergraduate and graduate courses in leadership theory, organizational leadership, research methods, community leadership, inclusive leadership, strategic leadership, and other related areas. The successful candidate will hold weekly, in-person office hours and will be assigned to teach both hybrid and online courses.

Requirements

  • Earned doctorate in Leadership or related social and behavioral science field from a regionally accredited program. ABD will be considered if the doctorate will be completed by July 30, 2027.
  • Documented evidence of ability in a teaching assignment.
  • Documented evidence of scholarly and creative achievement within the discipline of Leadership and/or Leadership-adjacent disciplines appropriate for the rank of Assistant Professor.
  • Documented evidence of university service and professional contributions and activities appropriate for that of an Assistant Professor.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience or interest in the area of Community Leadership, and Inclusive Leadership is desirable.
  • Strong evidence of research capabilities at the R1 level.
  • Evidence of graduate level program management, recruitment and teaching.

Responsibilities

  • Starting in Year Two, serve as departmental Graduate Coordinator and commit to all responsibilities associated with that role.
  • Be willing to adopt innovative teaching methods and delivery as appropriate.
  • Possess the knowledge, talents, and skills to promote effective teaching in the discipline of Leadership.
  • Demonstrate respect for the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop and implement curriculum objectives and content for courses offered and taught in one’s curriculum area.
  • Maintain high standards and expectations for all students.
  • Use multiple measures to assess student learning on a regular basis and provide frequent feedback to students relative to their performance.
  • Be available, knowledgeable and demonstrate proficiency in the practice of academic advisement of students.
  • Conduct appropriate research and scholarly/creative activity within the discipline.
  • Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development and exhibit a willingness to engage in service to the department, college, university, and broader community.
