About The Position

The Department of English at Bates College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Early Modern Literature and Culture. Candidates should have work that intersects with at least one of the following fields: premodern critical race studies, queer studies, trans studies, history of the book, and studies of globalization and transnationalism. The college seeks an outstanding scholar with a strong commitment to excellent undergraduate teaching and mentorship in a liberal arts environment. The position involves a standard five-course annual teaching load, including introductory and intermediate-level courses in early modern literature (Shakespeare, non-dramatic poetry, and prose), as well as upper-division courses in the candidate's specialization. Responsibilities also include advising students, mentoring senior theses, and contributing to the general education curriculum. Faculty duties extend to professional achievement, governance, and engagement as outlined in the Bates College Faculty Handbook. Successful candidates will contribute to inclusive and evidence-based teaching, maintain an active scholarship program, and participate in the college's life and governance.
