Assistant Professor - Engineering

UMass Boston•Boston, MA
•$80,000 - $120,000

About The Position

The Department of Engineering in the College of Science and Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Engineering, with an expected start date of September 1, 2027. The department seeks a dynamic and innovative candidate with a strong research record relevant to quantum information science and engineering (QISE). Applicants across a wide range of specialties are encouraged, especially experimentalists whose work will enhance or strategically complement ongoing efforts in Engineering, Physics, and the Data & Quantum Science Center. Areas of particular interest include superconducting quantum computing, quantum information processing, quantum electronic devices and systems, quantum sensing, quantum control, quantum materials, and quantum nano- and optomechanics. The successful candidate will establish a productive, externally funded, independent experimental research program; teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels; mentor graduate students; and contribute to developing courses in their area of expertise. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to a growing and inclusive Engineering Department and to interdisciplinary research across UMass Boston and the Greater Boston STEM community. The university supports tenure-track faculty with a competitive startup package and access to shared research facilities, including quantum core facilities for cryogenic measurement and quantum-device cleanroom fabrication. Applicants must have completed a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field by the time of hiring. Candidates should demonstrate strong research productivity, potential for external funding, commitment to excellent undergraduate teaching and graduate mentoring, and enthusiasm for contributing to an inclusive department. Applications must include a cover letter, comprehensive curriculum vitae, a 3–5-page statement describing current research, vision, and future research plans, and a teaching philosophy statement describing teaching experience. Review begins December 1, 2026, and continues until the position is filled. The expected salary range is approximately $80,000–$120,000; the specific offer will be determined by the University based on relevant factors.
