About The Position

The Department of Classical Studies at Trinity University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Classical Studies, beginning in August 2027, at the rank of Assistant Professor. The department is seeking a dynamic and innovative teacher with an active research profile who has a demonstrated ability in and enthusiasm for teaching ancient Greek language and literature at all levels and Latin up to the intermediate level and who specializes in the ancient Greek world, broadly defined. Particular areas of research and teaching that are attractive to us include Greek history, culture, and literature; multicultural approaches to the ancient Mediterranean world; ancient and modern reception of Classical texts and culture; or digital humanities. Candidates must demonstrate a strong research profile and a firm commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level. The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory courses while developing upper-division courses in their area of specialization. The ideal candidate will have a facility for interdisciplinary teaching and interest in mentoring students in undergraduate research projects, including in the summer. All faculty are expected to contribute to Pathways, the University’s interdisciplinary general education program.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or A.B.D. in Classics or related field. A.B.D. candidates must present evidence that Ph.D. will have been completed and accepted no later than August 2027.

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching experience, as Instructor of Record or Teaching Assistant (or equivalent) in an undergraduate course related to ancient Greek, Latin, or Classics.
  • Facility for interdisciplinary teaching.
  • Interest in mentoring students in undergraduate research projects, including in the summer.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Classical Greek at all levels and Latin to the intermediate level.
  • Teach both lower and upper-level courses in the candidate’s area of interest and expertise.
  • Offer courses that complement departmental offerings and contribute to the Pathways general education curriculum, including the First Year Experience, under a (typically) 3-2 teaching load.
  • Advise departmental majors and minors.
  • Maintain a consistent and productive program of scholarship, to include publication of research, presentations of papers at academic conferences, attendance at professional meetings, and participation in professional organizations.
  • Provide appropriate service to the department, the university, and the profession.
