About The Position

Rockhurst University and the College of Arts and Sciences is hiring a tenure-track or non-tenure-track faculty member in Architecture to start in January, 2027. In Fall 2027, Rockhurst will begin a Bachelor’s of Science in Architectural Studies (unaccredited) which will lead to a Master of Architecture, for which we will seek NAAB accreditation. We seek a creative and dynamic faculty member and program director for this program. This position will have a formative role in shaping the program. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and promoting a new program that is grounded in ethics and quantitative reasoning. Our Architecture program will embrace the Jesuit tradition of pedagogy, which is holistic and grounded in the liberal arts. The candidate will teach studio courses and other courses in architecture; develop the architecture curriculum; participate in the accreditation process; mentor students; build external connections with architecture firms. The successful candidate will have a professional degree in Architecture and licensure as an architect, with a minimum of four years of professional experience. Founded by the Jesuits in 1910, Rockhurst is a comprehensive university that offers more than fifty undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs taught by nationally recognized faculty.

Requirements

  • A doctorate is required for tenure-track status; a master’s degree will be considered for a non-tenure-track position.
  • A research and teaching focus in a field of architecture is required.
  • Evidence of scholarly and creative ability.
  • Evidence of commitment to scholarly work, service and teaching.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a part of a team professionally and confidentially.
  • A professional degree in Architecture.
  • Licensure as an architect.
  • A minimum of four years of professional experience.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior teaching experience in higher education preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Teach pertinent course subject matter using lectures, studios, class discussions, and other appropriate modes of educational delivery.
  • Prepare course outline and syllabus, develop course and lesson plans, and engage in the selection of textbook and other teaching aids necessary to the instruction of courses.
  • Conduct course instruction for one or more courses in the curriculum at the higher education level utilizing diverse teaching strategies, to include posting and grading on Rockhurst learning management system software.
  • Produce peer-reviewed scholarship in their disciplinary field.
  • Collect student assessment data in preparation for accreditation.
  • Interact with the RU Architecture Advisory Board.
  • Serve as an academic advisor to students, and foster students’ personal and professional development.
  • May also supervise independent study and individualized instruction as planned and approved with the collaboration of the Academic Dean.
  • Create new and revise existing courses and programs using current evidence-based practice.
  • Attend and participate in all college meetings, departmental meetings, committee meetings, graduations and other such gatherings as required of faculty members.
  • Provide service to the program, college, university and/or other constituents commensurate of one’s rank, through committee involvement and/or leadership.
