About The Position

The School of Music in the College of Music and Performing Arts at Belmont University is seeking applications for a tenure track faculty position in Applied Classical Percussion (Area Coordinator) at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 1, 2027. The primary responsibilities for this position include coordinating all aspects of a large and thriving percussion program that includes classical and commercial styles. Duties include recruitment of students, maintaining percussion instrument inventory, overseeing area faculty (full-time and adjunct), collaboration with the Coordinator of Instrumental Studies to provide and maintain percussion personnel for SOM ensembles, and other responsibilities as needed. This position will also provide applied instruction in undergraduate and graduate classical percussion. Other courses in performance and style and or/direction of an instrumental ensemble may be included based on candidate’s background and area of expertise. An annual teaching load would include a combination of coordinator responsibilities, applied lessons, and other coursework as needed to total a 24-hour teaching workload. Additional primary responsibilities include academic advising, maintaining scholarly/creative endeavors, and department, college, and university service. Candidates will be engaging teacher-artists with expertise in current practice in pedagogical principles, performance practice, and current best practice in the field. In addition, the successful applicant will enjoy working in a campus climate that promotes a Christ-centered environment and collegial atmosphere. Belmont University is particularly seeking applicants who can demonstrate the interest and ability to work collaboratively in course design and to teach interdisciplinary and topical courses in its innovative general education program.

Requirements

  • A terminal degree in percussion or related field is required.
  • Engaging teacher-artists with expertise in current practice in pedagogical principles, performance practice, and current best practice in the field.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods and current developments in the field of study.
  • Knowledge of subject matter and course content taught.
  • Knowledge of instructional strategies and techniques.
  • Demonstrated capacity to engage in high quality scholarly activity.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise, instruct, manage, motivate and evaluate students.
  • Skilled in the use of computers, Internet resources, and MS Office software.
  • Ability to learn relevant sections of BannerWeb, Belmont University’s online integrated database system for student grading.
  • Ability to integrate technology into the teaching and learning process.
  • Ability to successfully interact with students, other educators and educational institution representatives, and the general public in a professional manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of the programs and services offered by Belmont University.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies.
