About The Position

This is a tenure-eligible position for an Assistant Professor in Music Industry Careers. The role involves teaching a variety of commercial music courses, potentially including applied lessons, theory, songwriting, sight-singing, ear training, arranging, composition, and American Music. The position may also include directing commercial performing ensembles (Jazz, Rock, Country, Contemporary Christian, Improvisation) or teaching Music Business courses such as Survey of Music Business, Concert Promotion, Venue and Talent Management, Music Marketing, or Music Publishing. Additional responsibilities include active recruiting of Music Industry majors, performing in faculty ensembles, attending departmental concerts, maintaining office hours, serving on college committees, promoting the department's mission, participating in professional development and faculty evaluations, and collaborating across departments to develop student skills. Faculty are expected to accept course assignments in various modalities, including face-to-face, evening, weekend, dual credit, blended, and online. This position reports to the Division Chair, Visual & Performing Arts. It is a security-sensitive position requiring a background investigation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music or Commercial Music from an accredited college or university.
  • Professional performance experience.
  • Professional teaching experience.
  • Knowledge of all forms of Commercial or Popular Music such as Rock, Jazz, Country, Hip-Hop.
  • Knowledge of current trends in professional and educational commercial music performance.
  • Knowledge of teaching to various learning styles.
  • Knowledge of Compositional and Arranging techniques.
  • Knowledge of current practices and trends in Music Business.
  • Knowledge of ADA standards as they apply to instruction.
  • Ability to teach applied lessons, music theory, aural skills utilizing techniques of jazz and blues improvisation.
  • Ability to collaborate in recruitment/retention of Music Industry Careers students.
  • Ability to perform solo and collaboratively with faculty.
  • Ability to develop working relationships with area music teachers and music industry professionals.
  • Ability to use appropriate office and classroom technology including Dorico Notation software, Reason Sequencing, and Musescore.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within and across departmental lines.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide caring, high-quality service by creating welcoming experiences, communicating clearly and proactively, addressing needs with professionalism and empathy, and ensuring individuals are thoughtfully connected to appropriate resources.

Responsibilities
