About The Position

The Department of Philosophy at San José State University is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Philosophy of Technology to begin in August 2026. While the department welcomes research and teaching on emerging technologies, a broad interpretation of technology is encouraged. The university, located in Silicon Valley, actively promotes the intersection of humanities and technology. The new Advanced Institute for Ethical Technologies offers interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities focused on human-centered technology, privacy, and ethical decision-making. The Digital Humanities Center, a partnership with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library and the San Jose Public Library, supports curriculum development, faculty research, student engagement, and public programming. The Philosophy Department, part of the College of Humanities & the Arts, offers BA and MA programs and values diverse philosophical traditions and perspectives. Requirements

Ph.D. in Philosophy prior to appointment
A demonstrated record of effective teaching
Evidence of the ability to publish and engage in professional activities in the area of philosophy of technology
Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience

Nice To Haves

Demonstrated expertise in an additional area of philosophy (such as global philosophy, ethics, epistemology, political philosophy, philosophy of disability, etc.) that informs their philosophical engagement with technology
Interests in pursuing cross-tradition engagement in doing philosophical work on technology
Capacity to contribute to interdisciplinary research and teaching through the Advanced Institute for Ethical Technology
Teaching interests and competencies that could contribute to the department’s teaching needs in history of philosophy, ethical theory, phenomenology, Africana philosophy, Asian philosophy, applied ethics (e.g., professional and business ethics, environmental ethics, medical ethics), or phenomenology
Capacity to supervise MA students interested in pursuing our Advanced Certificate in Ethics of Science and Emerging Technologies

Responsibilities

Teach courses in the area of specialization, including “Science, Technology, and Human Values” and “Computers, Ethics and Society”.
Teach general education courses such as Introduction to Philosophy; Logic and Critical Reasoning; Moral Issues; Asian Philosophy; and Professional and Business Ethics; or courses in the history of philosophy.
Contribute to the department’s ability to offer courses through SJSU Online.
Sustain an ongoing record of research, scholarship, and/or creative activities, as well as other professional engagement.
Participate in shared governance, including department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
Demonstrate awareness and experience in understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
Comply with requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a mandated reporter.
Complete Clery Act training and report Clery incidents if designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
Complete assigned and required CSU employee training (e.g., Data Security, FERPA, Preventing Discrimination and Harassment, Title IX, Health and Safety).
Comply with safety measures that decrease the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission or illness as recommended or required by the President.
