About The Position

The School of Psychology and Cognitive Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is seeking a full-time, 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor of Computational Linguistics. This position, beginning in August 2027, also offers an affiliation with the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures. The ideal candidate will possess computational expertise, a strong research record, and demonstrated initiative in grant writing. A commitment to excellence in teaching and student mentoring at both undergraduate and graduate levels is essential. The role involves teaching courses in language technology, large language models, natural language processing, and/or computational speech processing, as well as foundational linguistics from a cross-linguistic perspective and courses in at least one additional linguistics, artificial intelligence, or cognitive science subfield. RIT is a technical university with rapidly expanding computational linguistics programs, and the successful candidate will contribute to interdisciplinary AI and Cognitive Science programs. Opportunities for collaborative research exist across RIT in areas such as linguistics of sign languages, artificial intelligence, human-centered computing, and cybersecurity, with access to extensive research computing resources.

Requirements

  • Earned doctoral degree (in hand by August 2027) in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research in computational linguistics.
  • Demonstrate potential for external research grant attainment.
  • Consistently and recently published in computational linguistics.
  • Demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching language technology, natural language processing, and/or computational speech processing.
  • Demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching foundational linguistics from a cross-linguistic perspective, and courses in at least one more linguistics, artificial intelligence, or cognitive science subfield.
  • Demonstrate potential for excellence in supervising graduate and undergraduate student research.
  • Show a career trajectory that emphasizes a balance between research and teaching.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in an additional language other than English is preferred.
  • Research or teaching experience involving language learning is welcomed.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in language technology and large language models, natural language processing, and/or computational speech processing.
  • Teach foundational linguistics from a cross-linguistic perspective, as well as courses in at least one additional linguistics, artificial intelligence, or cognitive science subfield.
  • Conduct independent research in computational linguistics.
  • Publish consistently and recently in computational linguistics.
  • Supervise graduate and undergraduate student research.
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students through advising, research, and in-class experiences.
  • Contribute to the interdisciplinary M.S. program in Artificial Intelligence and the Ph.D. program in Cognitive Science.
  • Actively pursue external funding and demonstrate potential for grant attainment.
