About The Position

The primary purpose of the Assistant Professor position is to provide expert clinical care to patients with gastrointestinal cancers, participate in translational and/or clinical research, and participate in the teaching and training of fellows, residents, and students. This role involves practicing clinical medicine, performing patient examinations and procedures, developing and maintaining a clinical practice, completing patient documentation, corresponding with physicians, staying updated on current approaches in patient management, sharing clinical responsibilities, and requesting consultations. Additionally, the position includes administrative duties such as participating in quality improvement projects, serving on committees, and representing the department at meetings. A significant portion of the role involves research, including engaging in clinical and translational research, developing research programs, identifying funding sources, and submitting grants. The position also entails educational responsibilities, acting as a role model, providing an educational program for trainees, attending teaching conferences, and supervising trainees. External service may include participating in research committees, collaborative research, conferences, and professional society activities, as well as editing and reviewing scientific publications.

Requirements

Capable of providing complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations.
Must be able to perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's subspecialty.
Requires standing, bending, stooping, lifting, hearing, manual dexterity, and clear and concise verbal communications.
Requires dictating in a clear and concise manner, and visual review of documents.
Requires listening to and assimilating information from conferences.
Ability to synthesize a myriad of information pertaining to the area of research.
May necessitate instructing, through written or verbal communication, research support personnel in clinical trials implementation.
Must be able to satisfy and maintain all requirements necessary to ensure the continued security and integrity of critical infrastructure.

Responsibilities

Practice clinical medicine in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners properly balanced with other academic activities.
Provide complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations.
Perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's subspecialty.
Develop and maintain a clinical practice for patients referred to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Provide physician staffing as appropriate for a training center and consult service at a level commensurate with that which would be provided by other physicians with the same level of training and experience.
Visually review for proper ICD-10 and CPT coding and approve all charge documents within four working days.
Complete patient documentation for medical records within time frames provided by institutional policy.
Correspond as appropriate in writing or in telephone conversations with physicians regarding patient care and treatment.
Keep abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences in the specialty.
Share clinical responsibilities with other faculty including but not limited to inpatient service, outpatient clinic and outpatient procedures and other duties as requested.
Request appropriate consultations for patients by phone conversations or in writing to other physicians.
Provide peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the department.
Participate in quality improvement and institutional effectiveness or healthcare excellence projects.
Participate in investigation and review of best practice initiatives and clinical and institutional effectiveness projects.
Serve on institutional and hospital committees as requested by the Chair.
Represent the Department by participating or presenting at local, regional, state, and national meetings in the field of medical oncology.
Actively engage in clinical and translational research and scholarly activities to enhance the academic environment of the department.
Develop research programs of scholarly activities in keeping within the goals of the department.
Identify grants and funding sources for funding of research, submit grants and protocols in accordance with rules and deadline applications, and develop budgets and analysis and complete grant and protocol application forms.
Act as a role model for faculty, fellows, residents and students.
Provide a balanced and integrated educational program for pediatric residents and fellows.
Attend and participate in Department teaching and continuing education conferences.
Supervise trainees as needed during their clinical rotations.
Participate in external or extramural service such as but not limited to external research committees, collaborative research activities, conferences, professional society activities, study sections, staff meetings, etc.
Edit and/or review presentations for scientific meetings, seminars, or public dissemination of research findings, abstracts, protocols, manuscripts, books, publications, reports or oral presentations, patents associated with research, research proposals, grant applications, etc.
