The Assistant Produce Manager is responsible for promoting excellent customer relations by instilling positive customer-focused behavior with associates. This role involves smiling and greeting customers, answering questions, and promptly resolving customer issues in a polite and professional manner. The position focuses on continuous improvement in all areas of the department, making changes to ensure progress, and taking customer orders over the phone or in person. Key responsibilities include creating finished products in a timely fashion, ensuring fresh quality merchandise through proper product handling, and helping to control damages and minimize product losses according to company procedures and standards. The Assistant Produce Manager assists the Produce Manager in day-to-day functions of Produce operations, including merchandising, ad execution, associate engagement, and customer service, and performs the duties of the Produce Manager in their absence. This role develops and implements merchandising plans that meet financial goals, stays knowledgeable on weekly ads and specials for correct pricing and production amounts, and continuously improves knowledge of produced merchandise. Adherence to and enforcement of company policy regarding production logs is crucial. The position oversees department inventories by tracking weekly sales reports, product orders, and supplies to ensure successful period-end physical inventory. It also assists with scheduling, training, rewarding and recognizing performance, and delegating work assignments to effectively utilize talents and abilities while maximizing profits. The Assistant Produce Manager utilizes the Learning Management System (LMS), manages inventory levels, reviews orders to meet customer demand, and maintains backroom organization and product storage within company guidelines. Oversight of shelf replenishment efforts ensures product availability, prioritizing weekly specials, seasonal and local items, and high-velocity items. The role utilizes the cutting list for accuracy and variety, checks and verifies deliveries and invoices, and may assist with unloading merchandise. Enforcement of department practices regarding receiving, dating, and restocking ensures product rotation. Monitoring product quality and freshness, breaking down deliveries, and controlling department expenses through operational improvements, labor cost control, and loss reduction are also key functions. The Assistant Produce Manager ensures associates correctly follow company recipes for prepared products, maintains freshness by removing and recording out-of-code products, and completes required product logs. Keeping the produce department well-stocked and appealing, handling special requests, and maintaining the salad bar and cut fruit/vegetable as needed are also part of the role. Building attractive displays, accurately completing product logs, and handling spoiled, damaged, new, and discontinued items according to policy are required. Maintaining backroom and receiving area security and organization, and ensuring general sanitation in the department by following cleaning schedules and guidelines to meet health and OSHA requirements are essential. Proper trash disposal and potential assistance with baling cardboard are also included. Cooperation with co-workers and superiors ensures the smooth function of the department and store, with a responsibility for continuous job performance improvement and utilization of all company-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The role may also be called upon to assist in other departments.
