The Assistant Produce Manager is responsible for promoting excellent customer relations by instilling positive customer-focused behavior with associates. This role involves greeting customers, answering questions, and resolving issues promptly and professionally. The position focuses on continuous improvement within the department, taking customer orders, and ensuring the quality and freshness of merchandise through proper handling techniques. The Assistant Produce Manager assists the Produce Manager in daily operations, including merchandising, ad execution, associate engagement, and customer service. They may also perform the duties of the Produce Manager in their absence. This role involves developing and implementing merchandising plans to meet financial goals, staying knowledgeable about weekly ads and specials, and continuously improving knowledge of produce merchandise. Adherence to company policy regarding production logs and overseeing department inventories are key responsibilities. The Assistant Produce Manager also assists with scheduling, training, rewarding performance, and delegating work assignments to maximize profits. They manage inventory levels, review orders to meet customer demand, and maintain backroom organization and product storage. Shelf replenishment, utilizing cutting lists, verifying deliveries and invoices, and potentially unloading merchandise are also part of the role. Enforcing department practices for receiving, dating, and restocking, monitoring product quality and freshness, and breaking down deliveries are crucial. Controlling department expenses by improving operations, efficiencies, labor costs, and reducing losses from damages, spoilage, and shrink are essential. Ensuring associates follow company recipes for prepared products, maintaining freshness by removing out-of-code products, and completing product logs are required. Keeping the produce department well-stocked and appealing, handling special requests like fruit baskets, unpacking merchandise, cleaning and trimming produce, and stocking new merchandise are also part of the job. Ensuring merchandise is saleable, rotating stock, pricing products correctly, and maintaining the salad bar and cut fruit/vegetable sections are necessary. Building attractive displays, accurately completing product logs, handling spoiled/damaged/new/discontinued items according to policy, and maintaining backroom and receiving area security and organization are important. General sanitation in the department, following cleaning schedules, and ensuring work areas, equipment, counters, and display cases meet health and OSHA requirements are mandatory. Disposing of trash properly and potentially assisting with baling cardboard are included. Cooperation with co-workers and superiors is expected for the smooth function of the department and store. Continuous improvement of job performance and utilization of all company-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are required. The Assistant Produce Manager may also be called upon to assist in other departments.
