About The Position

The Assistant Principal, under the direction of the Principal, offers strategic and instructional leadership. This role is committed to focusing on students and their learning while assisting in the management of the day-to-day operations of the school. The Assistant Principal collaborates with the principal to provide leadership and management of the middle school, treating all staff and students with respect and dignity. This role involves planning, conducting, and maintaining performance evaluations to ensure school goals and objectives are achieved. The Assistant Principal provides strategic leadership to ensure staff adhere to educational standards and District mission, and organizes support systems for optimal educational opportunities. They assist in establishing a school culture conducive to continuous improvement, facilitate collaborative processes, and participate in developing and updating a safe schools plan. Ensuring the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual safety of students and staff is a key responsibility, as is contributing to data-driven plans for student achievement improvement. The role requires using data to inform decisions about instruction and assessment, monitoring instructional practices, and communicating effective practices to staff. Assisting instructional staff in aligning curriculum, instruction, and assessment with learning goals, and monitoring staff implementation of the school improvement plan are also crucial. The Assistant Principal manages human and fiscal resources, assists in policy administration, and supervises personnel. They utilize staff development strategies, communicate and partner with families, staff, and community members, and promote an atmosphere of inclusiveness, equity, and respect. A commitment to closing achievement and opportunity gaps is expected, along with leadership in student management, discipline, and supervision. The Assistant Principal is a visible presence throughout the school, attends and supervises after-school events, and regularly informs the Principal and district administrators on school operations. Other assigned tasks by the principal and district are also part of the role.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Educational Administration or related field.
  • Ability to obtain Washington State Principal Certificate and/or Professional Administrator certificate prior to the first contracted day.
  • Five or more years of teaching and/or administrative experience.
  • Understand and support a variety of instructional roles.
  • Implement national and state standards.
  • Possess experience in curriculum development and assessment.
  • Understand how to identify and use data to support school improvement.
  • Possess the ability to manage and facilitate change.
  • Understand, support, and mentor teaching and learning.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and management of the middle school, treating all staff and students with respect and dignity.
  • Plan, conduct, and maintain performance evaluations designed to ensure that school goals and objectives are achieved.
  • Provide strategic leadership to ensure that all levels of staff adhere to school, district, state, and national educational standards, and goals as well as District mission and vision.
  • Organize and administer support systems to provide optimal educational opportunities for students.
  • Assist in establishing and sustaining a school culture conducive to continuous improvement for students and staff.
  • Facilitate collaborative processes leading toward continuous improvement.
  • Participate in the development and annual update of a comprehensive safe schools plan that includes prevention, intervention, crisis response, and recovery.
  • Ensure the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual safety of students and staff.
  • Contribute towards the development, implementation, and evaluation of the data-driven plan for the improvement of student achievement.
  • Use a variety of data to inform and support decisions about instruction and assessment of learning.
  • Use a variety of monitoring structures (e.g., informal observation, assessment and lesson plan analysis, formal lesson observation) to improve instruction and assessment of learning.
  • Communicate clearly effective instructional and assessment practices for staff.
  • Assist instructional staff in aligning curriculum, instruction, and assessment with national, state, and local learning goals.
  • Monitor, facilitate, and evaluate staff implementation of the school improvement plan, effective instruction, and assessment practices.
  • Manage human and fiscal resources to accomplish student achievement goals.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, interpretation, and administration of policies, rules, and regulations, and negotiated employee agreements.
  • Supervise, direct, and coordinate the assignment of instructional and support personnel.
  • Utilize staff development and improvement strategies and effectively address difficult issues and conduct essential conversations.
  • Communicate and partner with families, staff, and community members to promote student learning.
  • Build collegial and collaborative relationships with and among school staff members.
  • Promote and model an atmosphere of inclusiveness, equity, and respect among students, staff, and the community.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to closing achievement and opportunity gaps.
  • Provide leadership in student management, including the areas of student attendance, discipline, and supervision.
  • Direct and control student behavior and discipline, counseling students regarding acceptable school conduct and recommending appropriate action to be taken when necessary.
  • Be a visible and consistent presence throughout the school providing additional student supervision as required.
  • Attend and supervise after-school events and activities.
  • Inform and consult with the Principal and district administrators regularly on the overall operation of the middle school.
  • Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as may, from time to time, be assigned by the principal and district.
