About The Position

The City of Berkeley invites applications for the position of Assistant Planner. This role involves assisting higher-level planners in Land Use or Transportation by collecting data, performing research, and preparing reports. In the Land Use Division, responsibilities include tracking permit activity, researching zoning history, land use policies, development trends, and precedents, supporting commission meetings, preparing written reports, and presenting to various bodies. Incumbents will also assist in preparing amendments to the General Plan, Municipal Code, and other policy documents, and will use software for electronic forms, databases, records, and GIS/Adobe Creative Suite for maps and graphics. In the Transportation Division, responsibilities include assisting with research, planning, conceptual design, and delivery of transportation and parking projects, drafting public notification materials, assisting with outreach events, producing maps and graphics, coordinating shared mobility programs, assisting with transportation plans and policy documents, and supporting the operation of the City's demand-based parking pricing program by collecting and analyzing data.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college with major coursework in city, regional, or urban planning, or a closely related field.
  • Progressively responsible related experience may be substituted for the college coursework on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must be able to attend evening meetings as required.
  • A valid California driver's license is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Collect data, perform research, and prepare reports for higher-level planners in Land Use or Transportation.
  • Track permit activity.
  • Research zoning history, land use policies, development trends, and precedents.
  • Support commission meetings.
  • Prepare written reports and present to commissions, committees, community members, and other boards.
  • Assist in preparing amendments to the General Plan, Municipal Code, and/or other policy and procedure documents.
  • Maintain and update electronic forms, databases, and records using a variety of software.
  • Create maps and graphics in GIS and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Assist with research, planning, conceptual design, and delivery of transportation and parking projects.
  • Draft public notification materials.
  • Assist with organizing and/or attending outreach events, and conduct in-person outreach.
  • Produce maps and graphics for transportation projects and parking operations.
  • Assist with the City's coordination and monitoring of privately-operated shared mobility programs.
  • Assist with preparation of transportation plans and policy documents.
  • Support the ongoing operation of the City's demand-based parking pricing program, including data collection and analysis.
  • Assist with preparation of parking policy documents.
