About The Position
The Section of Pediatric Palliative Medicine, founded in 2022, is a rapidly growing clinical program within a large academic health system and the freestanding Children’s Hospital Colorado. The University of Colorado Department of Pediatrics is ranked among the top 10 academic programs nationally, and Children’s Hospital Colorado is a USNWR Top 10 children’s hospital. The section is dedicated to passion, innovation, and a flexible growth mindset, aiming to be a leading palliative medicine program. In addition to its clinical mission, the section is expanding its education program, including a pediatric track fellowship and an established VitalTalk program, with opportunities in clinical research, quality improvement, and advocacy.
Requirements
- MD or DO
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
- Colorado license, DEA and BLS will be required prior to start date.
- Minimum of 2 years of acute care and/or outpatient experience during fellowship or beyond (for Assistant Professor).
- Minimum 5 years of acute care and/or outpatient experience (for Associate Professor).
- Sustained clinical experience in pediatric palliative medicine.
- Must successfully pass a drug test through Children’s Hospital Colorado
- Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal background check

- Palliative Program Leadership
- Experience in contributing to program growth in areas of outpatient care and community hospice care.
- Knowledge of a variety of management of common pediatric and adolescent medical conditions, in the inpatient/outpatient and home-based hospice settings.
- Skills in the effective delivery of healthcare via phone and telehealth services.
- Strong spirit of collaboration and skills in working with an interdisciplinary team.
- Wide spectrum of knowledge of pediatric disease, pediatric prognostication and pediatric pain/symptom management.
- Highly skilled in empathic communication.
- Experience and desire to educate on the principles of pediatric palliative care.
- Superior organizational and prioritization skills, problem solving, and collaboration skills are necessary.
- Expertise and training in history and physical examinations and determination of treatment plans necessary.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive, focused assessment of children and families with palliative care needs.
- Formulate, implement, monitor, evaluate, and modify palliative care plans and program activities with input from the palliative care team and other collaborating care providers.
- Engage in quality improvement in patient care services and department functions, including evaluating the effectiveness of the health care delivery system in meeting the health care needs of pediatric palliative care patients and families.
- Collaboration on system-wide education initiatives within the scope of palliative medicine.
- Participate in pediatric palliative care research, including quality and performance improvement initiatives.
- Demonstrate accountability for evaluations of clinical practice, including adherence to organizations, state and national practice standards and codes.
- Attendance and participation in staff meetings is required.
