About The Position

The Department of Anthropology and Middle Eastern Cultures (AMEC) at Mississippi State University is seeking to hire an Assistant or Associate Professor with a specialization in Southeastern Archaeology. This tenure-track position involves conducting research, publishing scholarly work, participating in professional meetings, and teaching a range of undergraduate and graduate courses. The department offers an anthropology major, a Middle Eastern studies minor, and a growing applied anthropology MA program with tracks in archaeology, bioarchaeology, and cultural anthropology. The position is housed within the Cobb Institute of Archaeology, which provides resources such as office and lab space, a research library, a museum, and a curation facility. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the department's B.A. and M.A. programs, develop local or regional research projects, and seek external funding.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment.
  • Ability to teach a local archaeological site survey field school.
  • Ability to incorporate graduate students into their research.
  • Ability to participate concretely in the on-going development of the M.A. program in Applied Anthropology.
  • Basic field training that includes site survey.
  • Familiarity with grants and contracts.
  • Effective classroom teaching.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in area of specialty.
  • Publish scholarly articles, monographs, and books in area of specialty.
  • Participate in professional meetings by giving papers, presiding at sessions, and serving as discussant.
  • Promote the development of the archaeological profession locally and nationally.
  • Teach undergraduate survey courses.
  • Teach site survey (site discovery, delineation, evaluation) field school for undergraduates and graduate students with leveling needs.
  • Teach excavation field school as necessary.
  • Teach advanced undergraduate students in upper-level topical or area courses.
  • Teach graduate courses in area of specialty, including seminars, special topics, and directed readings.
  • Serve on graduate committees for M.A. students.
  • Direct graduate M.A. theses.
  • Serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
  • Seek external funding via grants or contracts.
  • Incorporate graduate students into their research.
  • Develop contacts for graduate internships.
  • Promote health of graduate program via external funding of Research Assistants through grants or contracts.
