About The Position

The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) is seeking to hire up to three inaugural tenure-track faculty members at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank in Engineering Technology. These positions are crucial for launching the new Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering Technology (BAS-ET) program, with a preferred start date of January 1, 2027, and a latest start date of August 16, 2027. The founding faculty cohort will be responsible for delivering the core curriculum, establishing a work-based learning sequence with regional employers, and preparing for ABET ETAC accreditation. The university is looking for candidates with expertise in applied engineering technology, with the final composition of the cohort determined by the applicant pool's strengths to ensure comprehensive coverage of the program's instructional needs. Preferred areas of expertise include automation, robotics, and industrial controls; engineering design, CAD/CAM, and manufacturing systems; systems integration, project management, and applied engineering practice; materials, measurement, and quality systems; and work-based learning coordination and industry partnership development. Significant industry experience is strongly preferred. These are full-time, on-campus, tenure-track academic appointments. UIS tenure-system faculty are expected to be actively engaged in the university community, fulfilling professional responsibilities in teaching, scholarship, and service. A mix of tenure-system and non-tenure system faculty may be part of this cohort. Visa sponsorship is not available for these positions.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in engineering, engineering technology, engineering education, manufacturing, applied science, or a closely related STEM discipline (ABD considered with expected completion within one year of start date).
  • Professional experience in an engineering, manufacturing, automation, construction, infrastructure, or related technical industry.
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to teach in applied, hands-on, lab-intensive learning environments.
  • Record of or clear potential for applied research, scholarship, or creative activity appropriate to rank.
  • Commitment to work-based learning and employer-integrated education.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ABET-accredited programs or accreditation processes.
  • Experience with community college transfer student populations.
  • Experience designing or coordinating cooperative education, internship, or work-based learning programs.
  • Record of industry-sponsored projects, applied research, or scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: automation, robotics, and industrial controls; engineering design, CAD/CAM, and manufacturing systems; systems integration and project management; materials, measurement, and quality systems.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver core coursework in the Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering Technology program, with assignments based on individual expertise and cohort needs.
  • Develop an active program of applied research or scholarly activity appropriate to engineering technology, including industry-sponsored projects, work-based learning pedagogy research, scholarship of teaching and learning, workforce development research, and contributions to professional societies.
  • Contribute to the development and growth of the BAS-ET program and the School of Applied Engineering through program-level, college-level, and university service.
  • Participate in the program's industry advisory board, developing and maintaining employer relationships for work-based learning placements.
  • Engage in community college partnership development, including articulation agreement planning and transfer pathway coordination.
  • Prepare for and contribute to ABET ETAC accreditation, including self-study documentation and continuous improvement processes.
  • Participate in K-12 pipeline engagement, supporting programs like the techX dual-credit program.
  • Engage in student recruitment activities, including outreach, campus visit participation, and community college advising.
  • Serve on assigned college and university committees.
