About The Position

The McGill University Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, invites applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be determined according to the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a three-year, renewable appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure. The successful candidate will be appointed to clinical practice at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC)—a major teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. The Department seeks a highly motivated academic ophthalmologist with advanced subspecialty expertise in uveitis and ocular inflammatory disease. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to academic excellence through clinical care, teaching, research, and scholarly activity.

Requirements

  • Hold or be eligible for licensure in ophthalmology in the province of Quebec.
  • Completed recognized subspecialty fellowship training in uveitis and ocular inflammatory disease.
  • Demonstrate expertise in the medical management of complex ocular inflammatory disease, including systemic immunomodulatory therapy.
  • Demonstrate evidence of scholarly activity and/or clinical research productivity.
  • Demonstrate strong potential for academic leadership, collaboration, innovation, and teaching excellence.
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec.
  • Ability to interact in English and in French with patients, families and health care professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive management of ocular inflammatory disease, including anterior, intermediate, posterior, and panuveitis.
  • Perform advanced diagnostic evaluation and management of uveitic disease.
  • Utilize ocular imaging and ocular ultrasonography relevant to ocular inflammation.
  • Administer systemic immunomodulatory and immunosuppressive therapy for ocular inflammatory disease.
  • Contribute to the growth and advancement of a high-volume tertiary/quaternary uveitis service.
  • Dedicate approximately 2 days per week to uveitis-focused clinical activity.
  • Participate in shared clinical service responsibilities, including after-hours care.
  • Actively participate in clinical care, undergraduate, postgraduate, and fellowship education.
  • Engage in clinical and/or translational research.
  • Disseminate scholarly work and provide academic leadership.
  • Provide excellent clinical and surgical teaching and supervision to medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Develop or participate in innovative scholarly initiatives and collaborative research activities.
  • Develop an independent externally funded research program (encouraged).
  • Participate/collaborate in surgical management of uveitic disease and related ophthalmic conditions (depending on training, privileges, needs, and resources).
  • Contribute to departmental strategic initiatives related to innovative care delivery models, teleophthalmology, and improved access to subspecialty ophthalmic care for underserved populations.
  • Be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents and involvement in academic and administrative committees).
  • Contribute to academic and service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community.
