About The Position

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of New Mexico (UNM) Health Sciences Center is seeking an outstanding oculoplastic/oculofacial and orbital surgeon to join their rapidly growing academic department. The successful candidate will contribute to a collaborative ophthalmology service focused on providing exceptional oculoplastic, orbital, lacrimal, and reconstructive eye care to patients in New Mexico and surrounding regions. The role involves a blend of tertiary referral care and safety-net medicine, offering exposure to diverse ophthalmic conditions and patient populations. The physician will have the opportunity to grow an existing comprehensive oculoplastic surgery practice, encompassing functional and cosmetic eyelid surgery, orbital disease, lacrimal disorders, periocular and orbital trauma, and ophthalmic oncology, in collaboration with multidisciplinary partners. There are also opportunities to expand aesthetic oculoplastic services based on the candidate's interests. The role includes collaboration with various specialties, sharing general ophthalmology call responsibilities, and actively participating in the education of residents and medical students. The department has a recently established ophthalmology residency program and is experiencing significant growth, offering a unique chance to help build and shape the department while addressing a critical need for specialized oculoplastic and orbital care. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to patient care, teaching, and scholarly activity within an academic setting, with opportunities for clinical research and collaboration through the department's growing research enterprise.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Ophthalmology Residency Program
  • Completion of an Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship (or equivalent fellowship with completion prior to appointment)
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Ophthalmology
  • Eligible for medical licensure in the State of New Mexico
  • Eligible to work in the United States

Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional oculoplastic, orbital, lacrimal, and reconstructive eye care.
  • Join and grow an existing comprehensive oculoplastic surgery practice, including functional and cosmetic eyelid surgery, orbital disease, lacrimal disorders, periocular and orbital trauma, and ophthalmic oncology.
  • Expand aesthetic oculoplastic services based on candidate's interests and expertise.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in ophthalmology, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, dermatology, facial and general plastic surgery, oncology, trauma, and other specialties.
  • Share general ophthalmology call responsibilities with existing faculty.
  • Actively participate in the education of residents from multiple specialties and medical students.
  • Help build and shape the department.
  • Address a significant regional need for specialized oculoplastic and orbital care.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to outstanding patient care, teaching, and scholarly activity within an academic environment.
  • Engage in clinical research, clinical trials, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
