About The Position

The Hartford seeks an Assistant Managing Attorney (“AMA”) to join a dynamic team which represents insureds, and The Hartford itself at times, in workers compensation, commercial and personal auto, general liability, group benefits and similar matters, litigated and not, along with referrals from other lines of business. Our staff legal office appears in State and Federal courts, Arbitrations, and Workers Compensation tribunals across Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The AMA will oversee our practice, assist as a leader in office-related matters, handle Claims and client relationships, ensure adherence with corporate and departmental policies, and provide some file handling. The selected candidate can expect to regularly collaborate with our claims partners to help achieve expected business outcomes, while also fostering The Hartford’s reputation of excellence in the legal community. In addition to helping to provide leadership for the staff counsel office, the AMA shall build and maintain partnerships with other staff legal office’s managers, attorneys, support staff and claims partners, and partner with our larger organization on corporate initiatives, continuous learning efforts, and facilitate professional development.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of legal experience, including work in some, or all, of the following states: IL/IN/WI/MN.
  • Active litigation and direct file-handling in relevant areas of practice, including but not limited to some combination of: WC, auto, general liability and other relevant lines of business.
  • Management experience (i.e., direct leadership, project oversight, training, coaching, and/or mentoring).
  • Member in good standing with the Illinois state and federal general bar.
  • Experience analyzing data to derive insights.
  • Demonstrated presentation, communication, and technical skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, MS Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, CoPilot and/or similar models, and adaptable to learning new software platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership within the staff counsel office, build and maintain internal and external relationships, provide oversight, audit and guidance on case handling at the file level, and manage a personal caseload.
  • Corporate leadership responsibilities along with legal ethics responsibilities in connection with direct management of legal professionals.
  • Conduct suit analyses and frequent reviews of staff law office files; evaluate talent for performance cycles; seek to continuously improve key performance indicators as decided upon by local or more senior leadership from time-to-time.
  • Compile and analyze data and statistics for preparation of business reports.
  • Identify issues of client, claim or corporate implications.
  • Recruit, hire, develop and retain outstanding legal staff and support staff.
  • Ensures adherence to all quality, customer service and litigation management standards; conducts local management file reviews.
  • Accountability for team compliance with litigation guidelines, substantive handling, and client along with customer service, as well as successful completion of initiatives as per criteria the organization at a given time promotes through internal and external survey and feedback.
