About The Position

The Assistant Manager, Bars and Concessions supports the planning and execution of bar and concession operations across multiple event spaces at both Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall. This role ensures all bar and concession areas are properly set up, staffed, and stocked, while providing on-site leadership to deliver seamless service during events of varying size, complexity, and overlapping schedules. Working closely with the Manager, the Assistant Manager fosters strong relationships with vendors, preferred suppliers, internal departments, and a diverse workforce of full-time, part-time, and contract staff to ensure exceptional patron service. Responsibilities include staff scheduling, training, and supervision; conducting pre-event briefings and post-event reporting; managing inventory and vendor coordination; and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and responsible alcohol service standards. The role also contributes to financial oversight through event settlements, inventory control, and departmental budgeting input, while supporting POS systems and operational reporting. Through proactive problem-solving, continuous improvement, and a strong focus on service excellence, the Assistant Manager helps deliver bar and concession operations that meet or exceed patron expectations.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years management experience with revenue responsibility and accountability in the hospitality or food and beverage industry
  • Strong leadership skills with demonstrated ability to motivate and develop staff and foster a positive team environment
  • Ontario Smart Serve Certification
  • Knowledge of MSOffice
  • Knowledge of POS systems an asset

  • College-level Diploma or equivalent in Food and Beverage Management, Event Management, Service Management or Hospitality Management an asset

Responsibilities

  • Support the planning and execution of bar and concession operations across multiple event spaces.
  • Ensure all bars and concession areas are properly set up, stocked, and staffed for each event, for both Halls, including Lounge(s), serveries, and vendor stock as appropriate or warranted.
  • Ensure staff are knowledgeable about the specifics of each event through briefings, both in advance and on the day of the event.
  • Provide on-site leadership during events and ensuring smooth service delivery.
  • Anticipate problems and initiate corrective action during events, keeping Management immediately informed of problems of a serious nature or having broad impact to the reputation or the liabilities of the organization.
  • Address and resolve patron and client/artist complaints in collaboration with other departments as required.
  • Conduct pre-event briefings and post-event wrap-ups, including reporting and operational follow-up.
  • Ensure that daily maintenance and cleaning of Bars and Concession equipment, Point-of-Sale (POS) system and related storage areas or lockers.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organization, and equipment readiness.
  • Collaborate with Food & Beverage leadership to administer and track time-off requests and leaves of absence in alignment with organizational policies, ensuring consistent coverage and compliance.
  • Contribute, alongside leadership team members, to the development of event staffing schedules, ensuring appropriate coverage based on event size and complexity.
  • Work with the team to coordinate availability and assignments for part-time, contract, and event staff.
  • Supervise staff during events, providing real-time direction, coaching, and support.
  • Assist with recruitment, training, onboarding, and performance management for frontline staff.
  • Contribute to the annual Performance Reviews for the part-time staff.
  • Foster a positive, team-oriented work environment focused on service excellence.
  • Ensure product inventory controls are in place and being monitored and reconciled on a regular basis; coordinate with other management to ensure ongoing management of inventory to satisfy the demands of all events.
  • Execute settlements at event close, ensuring all financials are reconciled the same night and post-event reports are completed accurately.
  • Complete reports and administrative documentation in a timely manner.
  • Assist with inventory tracking, ordering, and vendor coordination.
  • Act as an effective role model with respect to professionalism, teamwork and patron service and health and safety for all.
  • Continually ensure exemplary patron service is provided by staff through direct supervision of and collaboration with F & B team.
  • Contribute to regular staff meetings at the departmental and organizational level to ensure effective communication and coordination within and across all departments.
  • Identify opportunities to improve service delivery, efficiency, and guest experience.
  • Work in collaboration with other members of the management team to develop solutions to systemic issues within the organization and contribute to the achievement of overall organizational goals.
  • Offer insights into broader Bar and Concession operations trends, and identify new potential products, services and service delivery options that would enhance our service for recommendation to Management.
  • Contribute to an annual assessment of Bar and Concession equipment and make recommendations for service and equipment improvement to Management.
  • Support a culture of accountability, safety, and collaboration.
  • Ensure compliance with AGCO, OHSA, health, and fire safety regulations.
  • Communicate corporate, health and safety, and human resources policies and ensure compliance for all parties working events at both venues.
  • Promote and enforce responsible alcohol service practices.
  • Ensure staff are trained in emergency procedures and incident response.
  • Document and report incidents in accordance with organizational policies.
