About The Position

Redwood Day is seeking an Assistant Librarian to support the Head Librarian in managing the school's library collection of 12,000 titles. This role involves collaborating on the planning and teaching of K-2 library specialist classes, assisting with online databases, cataloging resources, supporting student research, creating library displays and events, and managing book processing, acquisition, and de-selection. The Assistant Librarian will also perform regular library maintenance tasks, communicate with students and families, and contribute to collection development. Key responsibilities include checking books in and out, processing and shelving books, weeding the collection, creating book displays and signage, and reading shelves. The position also entails teaching K-2 Library classes, demonstrating mastery of subject matter and instructional skills, establishing a safe and inclusive learning environment, and utilizing effective classroom management techniques. The Assistant Librarian will use technology to enhance learning, provide feedback to students, and collaborate with teachers to support curriculum-related research. Attendance at library staff meetings, specialist meetings, curriculum meetings, and occasional all-staff meetings is expected. The role also involves assisting with the Book Fair, supervising students during recesses and duty periods, supporting author visits, and maintaining positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and the community. The Assistant Librarian will also complete a quarterly specialist newsletter and fulfill other assigned duties.

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular library maintenance, including checking books in and out, processing new books, shelving books, continuing collection development, weeding books, creating rotating book displays, creating signage, reading shelves, communicating with students and families regarding student accounts, and collecting books from K-2 classrooms.
  • Plan, organize, and teach K-2 Library classes.
  • Demonstrate mastery of subject matter, instructional skills, and resource materials for K-2 Library courses.
  • Establish a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
  • Monitor and maintain a positive classroom environment that supports school-wide behavioral expectations.
  • Utilize a variety of effective instructional and classroom management techniques.
  • Use available technology/instructional media to enhance students’ learning experiences.
  • Provide consistent, immediate feedback to student learning.
  • Work with classroom teachers, as determined by the Head Librarian, to assist with online information resources & research that support the curriculum.
  • Attend regular library staff meetings, specialist meetings, and curriculum meetings, along with occasional all-staff meetings.
  • Attend planning meetings and assist with all aspects of the Book Fair, including supervising classes and student browsing periods.
  • Supervise library during student recesses, when open.
  • Help plan recess parties.
  • Support library-sponsored author visits.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate relationships with students, parents/guardians, staff, and community members by communicating tactfully, courteously, and confidentially.
  • Supervise assigned students during assigned duty periods (morning, recess, lunch, etc.).
  • Complete the specialist newsletter quarterly.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned.
