About The Position

Performs copy and original cataloging to ensure findability and provide accurate access points to resources in the High Point Public Library catalog. Provides knowledgeable application and addition of subject headings and classification schemes (AACR2, RDA). Completes work in a timely manner in a busy Technical Services division. High Point Public Library is a member of NC Cardinal and the Technical Services division works within the NC Cardinal consortium cataloging policies. Initial work schedule will be 8am-5pm Monday-Friday. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Technical Services Division Manager. This is a non-supervisory position.

Requirements

  • Completion of an MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Minimum of 1 year cataloging experience.
  • NC Cardinal Cataloging certification or ability to obtain certification within 3 months of hire.
  • Experience with original & copy cataloging, MARC records, classification of library materials, and the use of integrated library systems (ILS).
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and vendors/library patrons.
  • Capable of accurate and detail-oriented work.
  • Ability to focus while working in an environment where interruptions are common.
  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • A valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina or eligible for one.
  • Must have or be eligible for NC Public Librarian Certification.

Nice To Haves

  • 2 or more years cataloging experience.
  • Experience working in NC Cardinal/Evergreen and/or cataloging within a consortium.
  • Competence using Microsoft Excel.
  • Work or volunteer experience with public libraries.

Responsibilities

  • Perform original and copy cataloging of print, non-print and digital materials, completing work in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Interpret and apply Library of Congress subject headings, the Dewey Decimal System, RDA, and the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) manuals in cataloging and classifying library materials.
  • Add and delete holdings information in OCLC.
  • Participate in database, metadata, and authority file cleanup projects.
  • Assist in provision of staff/intern training as needed.
  • Answer staff entrance doorbell and work with delivery people, library vendors, and anyone dropping off Friends of the Library donations.
  • Serve on library committees as requested.
  • Evaluate purchased and donated materials for addition to the library collection, per collection development policies.
  • Troubleshoot issues with items not circulating properly.
  • Assist as needed with the physical processing of materials.
  • Reclassify materials when requested.
  • Participate in professional conferences and meetings and stay informed about current library-related developments.
  • Ensure that all work in the Technical Services division is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
