About The Position

The Assistant Lab Co-ordinator is responsible for assisting the Lab Coordinator in ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the Health Studies Laboratories. They support lab-based instruction for the Health Studies program, contributing to the educational goals of the Faculty of Human & Social Sciences. This role involves the delivery, development, evaluation, and revision of lab exercises under the direction of the Lab Coordinator. The Assistant Lab Co-ordinator also serves as a resource for students in assigned Community Health courses. While Laboratory Coordinators are primarily responsible for laboratory content, this role has full responsibility for assigned laboratory sessions. The position reports to the Senior Administrative Officer, FHSS and the Course Instructor, with day-to-day direction from the Lab Coordinator. This is a university-wide role based at the Brantford Campus, requiring regular interaction and collaboration with departments at the Waterloo Campus and external partners, with a focus on equitable service delivery across all locations.

Requirements

Minimum MSc degree in Kinesiology or related field.
Experience in teaching or equivalent pedagogical skill in optimizing the operation and educational value of formal labs is an asset.
Strong knowledge in human anatomy and physiology and experience working with anatomy models.
Ability to create laboratory exercises, which may require coding or on-line assessment tools.
Familiarity with the preparation of materials for the Web.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including experience in facilitating student participation and engagement through motivation, influence, and persuasion.
Well-developed organizational skills to ensure labs are prepared, delivered, and administered weekly in accordance with the department’s demanding course schedule; skill in advance planning, scheduling, and organizing of time, resources, materials, and available personnel.
Excellent supervisory skills.

Responsibilities

Ensures students are following laboratory safety standards, including tracking and ensuring completion of student WHMIS training, reviewing appropriate personal protective equipment and attire, and identifying and reporting any issues to the Lab Co-ordinator.
Assists Lab Coordinator and Course Instructor in designing and preparing lab content to support Community Health courses, including establishing marking criteria/rubrics, creating pre-lab presentations, creating and marking lab quizzes, and ensuring lab content aligns with lecture material.
Ensures students engage with course material using lab presentations, models, and physiological testing.
Ensures all grades are uploaded to MyLS in a timely manner.
Provides professional lab instruction and supports student development.
Adheres to course standards and maintains academic/mark integrity.
Maintains student lab attendance and grading records.
Ensures students use models and equipment properly by providing proper instruction.
Supports students in developing professional work habits, skills, and efficient use of resources, including maintaining and protecting anatomy and physiology resources.
Creates and fosters a safe and welcoming environment for students.
