About The Position

The Assistant Justice Program Manager will be responsible for performing a wide variety of administrative and coordination duties that supports Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak’s Inc. First Nation Justice Strategy (FNJS). Under the supervision of the Justice Program Manager the Assistant Justice Program Manager will support the justice program with project administration, implementing and managing the MKO Justice Programs policies, protocols, and procedures. MKO is a political advocacy organization that works to represent the leadership and member First Nations. All staff at MKO may be given other duties as assigned that enable MKO to fulfill the mandate and responsibility to its member communities.

Requirements

  • Post-Secondary education and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience of working in the Project Management.
  • Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System and/or Indigenous Justice and social factors contributing to the risk of criminal behavior and re-offending.
  • High organizational and prioritization skills to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
  • Supervisory experience leading teams, training, and supporting staff, assigning tasks, organize daily operations, and provide feedback to management.
  • Experience in developing and monitoring operational plans and program activities.
  • Experience in preparing statistical reports and presenting findings.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and aptitude in long-term planning.
  • Strong computer literacy is required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for proofreading, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently under pressure, discretion with confidential information, and excellent communication skills.
  • Team player with a strong ability to contribute to a positive team environment.
  • Knowledge of First Nations/Indigenous cultures, beliefs, values, traditions, and practices.
  • Ability to be flexible with time and travel as required.
  • Posses a valid driver’s licence, access to a reliable vehicle, and be willing to travel.
  • Must be able to provide a satisfactory and current Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Registry Check, and Adult Abuse Registry Check.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Program Manager with the supervision and management of justice program staff.
  • Maintain the supervision and triaging of incoming justice diversion referrals to appropriate program staff.
  • Managing and handling sensitive legal documents and confidential information while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Participate in staff meetings and other internal meetings as requested.
  • Co-develop, organize and draft policies and directives for justice staff on community justice committee, forums, and community-based programs and provide support and direction on such matters.
  • Promote the use of Indigenous and Restorative Justice practices and case conferencing models in MKO communities and with MKO membership.
  • Liaise, develop, support, and maintain positive working relationships with leadership, membership and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Conduct presentations on the MKO Justice Program and justice initiatives to stakeholders, such as the judiciary, correctional staff, community leadership and members.
  • Work with the justice staff, justice committees, and MKO communities towards reducing the number of MKO citizens involved in the justice system by community planning, delivery, and evaluation of services.
  • Assist the Program Manager in researching, analyzing, and reviewing information from Provincial, National and International jurisdictions on existing Indigenous Justice Programming and Restorative Justice Programs.
  • Manage own workload through utilization of effective time management; organizes workstation, record keeping, and filing systems (electric and paper), and utilizes computer for data management.
  • Adhere to MKO policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Other duties as assigned.
