About The Position

Under general supervision, perform semi-skilled installation, repair, and preventative maintenance on air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating equipment. This role involves planning, inspecting, recording, and monitoring HVAC concerns, researching issues, and ordering necessary parts and supplies. The Assistant HVAC Technician will work closely with HVAC Technicians, assisting in various aspects of system maintenance and installation.

Requirements

  • Requires high school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Ohio Driver’s License.
  • Completion of a 1-year University of Akron or other State Approved Sponsored Apprenticeship Program for Trade OR a minimum of 2 years trades experience in commercial/industrial HVAC systems.
  • Ability to repair air conditioning and heating units, refrigeration systems, pneumatic controls, steam traps, pressure regulators, etc.
  • Ability to install air conditioning and heating units.
  • Ability to work with energy management personnel to regulate system and assist with trade shops as required.
  • Ability to learn, operate and use standard powered and nonpowered tools and equipment such as welders, machine threader, manlift and others required to complete assigned tasks.
  • Ability to perform mathematics associated with trade applications (fractions, ratios, percentages).
  • Ability to read, write, observe and accurately follow oral, written and graphic instructions.
  • Problem solving skills and the ability to use judgment in determining the correct course of action when troubleshooting.
  • Must be able to lift 80 pounds without assistance and demonstrate bending, crouching and lifting.
  • Must be able to climb a ladder, scaffolding and work on rooftops.

Responsibilities

  • Clean ducts, vents, registers, air chambers, and filter screens of furnaces and air handling units.
  • Remove and replace air filters with clean ones.
  • Clean filter screens using solvent.
  • Remove dust, dirt, and grime from air chambers, ducts, and coils (indoor and outdoor) using various techniques.
  • Assist HVAC Technicians in the installation and maintenance of HVAC systems.
  • Assist in assembling, disassembling, and reassembling all types of HVAC/R systems and their components.
  • Assist in the installation of HVAC/R systems in accordance with diagrams, using appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Assist with and perform regularly scheduled preventative maintenance of heating and air conditioning equipment.
  • Thoroughly inspect equipment and advise supervisor of any problems.
  • Plan, inspect, record, and monitor HVAC concerns.
  • Research concerns and order repair parts and supplies.
  • Complete work, time, and material usage reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Superintendent/Supervisor.
